Because of your kindness, my students have been able to engage with a text that is not only historically significant, but deeply relevant to the world we are all trying to navigate today. At a time when it feels like we are taking steps backward in our collective understanding of empathy and watching active efforts to erase history, Junie has opened the door to timely, thoughtful, and necessary conversations in our classroom. \r\n\r\nIn these first few weeks of our unit, students have watched the author's interview on Good Morning America to shed light on her intentions and make our identification of themes stronger; they have written personal reflections on topics found in Junie such as friendship, betrayal, power, identity, and more; they have made connections to Harriet Tubman and current articles from NPR and Oprah Daily that specifically discuss the importance of nuance when representing of black characters in film and literature. They have also designed their own dust jackets based on characters, symbols, and imagery in their reading so far. \r\n\r\nTruly, in these last three weeks I have seen my students form meaningful connections to Junie's experiences, discovering first love, grieving the loss of someone deeply important, and grappling with the unjust power dynamics that upheld slavery and that still persist in our society today. Your support has made this learning possible, and I am incredibly grateful for the impact you have had on my students and their growth as empathetic readers and citizens.","fullyFundedDate":1756158199220,"projectUrl":"project/fresh-books-for-freshmen-diverse-voices/9547876/","projectTitle":"Fresh Books for Freshmen: Diverse Voices in Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Johns","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10159290_orig.jpg?crop=1367,1367,x0,y109&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755448755750","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10159290"},{"teacherId":9250908,"projectId":9537058,"letterContent":"This was truly one of the most meaningful gifts we could have imagined for our high school library. The original request was for bikes, and after the project was funded, we received notice from DonorsChoose that the bike order could not be fulfilled. DonorsChoose then offered us the opportunity to select replacement materials.\r\n\r\nBecause bikes were still a priority for our students, we used your generous funding to purchase essential library supplies and student resources. This, in turn, freed up space in our library budget so we could purchase bikes from a different vendor—and make the original vision a reality.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly grateful that you allowed us the flexibility to repurpose the funds in such a thoughtful way. Thanks to your support, our students now benefit from both the bikes and the many new supplies that enhance their daily experience in the library. Or, creating a research progress chart to reflect on how they are doing in their multi-week research project. \r\n\r\nI've also been able to use the carts and bins to organize handouts, supplies, and prizes for kids.
