I think this may have been their favorite activity so far this year. \r\n\r\nWe began by learning about physics and the history of catapults and how they affected certain areas during history. We also learned about the activity of pumpkin launching that has begun taking place annually in many places across the country. They were very interested to learn about this information as well as being able to hand a hands on experience. \r\n\r\nStudents received the challenge of building their own. They had options between spoons and bottle caps to use as the \"pumpkin\" holder. They were able to explore between the different number of popsicle sticks and tightness of the rubber bands. Of course, the enjoyed launching pumpkins to see whose can go the farthest. \r\n\r\nNone of this would have been possible without your generous donations.","fullyFundedDate":1755734243147,"projectUrl":"project/launching-into-stem/9478017/","projectTitle":"Launching into STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kerstetter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp789166_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1531369709662","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-kerstetter"},{"teacherId":8181884,"projectId":9841363,"letterContent":"My 4th grade students had a reading day lesson this week, but I took time out for one 4th grade class to explore the How to Lego building books instead of a more traditional reading experience. The students were so excited. The only complaint I had from students was that I didn't have enough books and that we needed more. Students were inspired to create from the books and also made independent creations. My favorite creation was the Star Wars ship from picture #3. The students worked hard to make the fighter match the picture from the book. Another group showed me the pictures and designs in their book and exclaimed 'how pretty the designs were.' One student really wanted to make the hot dog car, but his table mates wanted to make the blue hot rod car. Clearly, we have a winner of a new book series and winning activity that should be repeated as a reward day in the near future. One thing I know about this generation is that they need to grow interests outside of those from technology. I am so grateful I could grow their imagination this week. Now they have a new collection of Lego how to books to read. Finally, they may become inspired to become engineers, artists, or just to grow their skills in a hobby. Thank you for this priceless gift for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1762267456882,"projectUrl":"project/how-to-build-lego-books-engineering-ar/9841363/","projectTitle":"How to Build Lego Books: Engineering, Art, Reading = Win-Win!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stansbury","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8181884_orig.jpg?crop=1030,1030,x1370,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1716655693117","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/stansbury"},{"teacherId":8625169,"projectId":9474386,"letterContent":"I am so excited to show you what we have done with the products we purchased from your donation! We read \"Lucky Duck\" by Greg Pizzoli to begin. My students loved this book. It is a different retelling of another beloved book that is part of my kindergarten lessons called \"That is Not a Good Idea\" by Mo Willems. Both books explore a dangerous animal (fox or wolf) trying to trick a duck into becoming dinner. My students were able to compare and contrast both books. Lucky Duck came out the winner.\r\n\r\nThen we dived into the scary story \"The Quacken\" by Justin Colon. It was a perfect next book to read as it was October and a funny scary book was in the cards. My students fell in love with the scary duck that swam in the deep lake. The ending was hilarious. It was also too funny that both of our first two read aloud books featured ducks!! \r\n\r\nWe are exploring the book \"One Day This Tree Will Fall\" by Leslie Barnard Booth next. It is perfect as 1st grade is learning about unusual plants and with the season being autumn exploring the natural world is a fun connection. \r\n\r\nI look forward to reading the entire bookshelf with my students and voting for our favorite book in April 2026. All the books were checked out before Halloween, and we took pictures with the new books when they returned. It just happened to be Halloween on picture day, so you can see our amazing storybook character costumes. \r\n\r\nIn the meantime, student focus is shifting to holiday books like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. My students quickly cue and I am able to help students in quick succession. Instead of students chasing me around the library, I am able to quickly help students. I have close proximity to our instructional area and two nearby catalog computers. I was surprised that students line up with more questions than checkout questions. Students will cue up and ask form permission to use the restroom or ask questions about a task they are working on during checkout. Instead of having my attention diverted to only checkout all students feel empowered to get help. I have been able to keep checkout to 3 - 5 minutes per class. We have 2 classes at a time. \r\n\r\nI can't wait to put our green lanyards into action. Students will have their name, grade, and homeroom teacher. On the reverse will be permission to visit the library during open checkout and identify additional locations students are permitted to checkout beyond those recommended by grade level. \r\n\r\nI also discovered an additional use for the lanyards.
