It's helped us create a sense of community and structure. One memorable moment happened during a recent reading mini-lesson: students sat in a perfect circle, fully engaged, sharing their thinking with confidence. That level of focus and participation has been so much easier to foster with a cozy, defined gathering space.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're using the rug to build routines and group dynamics that will carry us through the year. The moment my students saw the colorful containers, their faces lit up with joy. Several of them actually squealed and immediately began brainstorming what they could create.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the Play-Doh in so many meaningful ways. One of our favorite activities has been using it during our literacy centers to form letters and spell sight words—it's helped reinforce phonics skills through hands-on play. We also used it to model 3D shapes in math, and it's become a go-to tool for calming down during transitions or when students need a little sensory break.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the Play-Doh has been a huge help in strengthening fine motor skills. Rolling, pinching, and shaping the dough is fun for the kids, but it's also building the hand strength and coordination they need for writing, cutting, and other everyday tasks.\r\n\r\nYour support has added a spark of joy and creativity to our classroom that we'll carry through the rest of the year. They eagerly explored the different tools, from tweezers to lacing cards, with wide eyes and big smiles. Many of them immediately started experimenting, trying to pick up small objects or thread strings through tiny holes. It was incredible to see their curiosity and enthusiasm as they realized these materials were both fun and challenging.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite activities so far has been a fine motor \"station rotation\" where students practice different skills at various centers. Some students have been using tweezers to sort pom-poms by color, while others are strengthening their hand muscles by squeezing playdough and using stampers. One of the most memorable moments was when a student, who usually struggles with hand coordination, successfully completed a lacing card for the first time. He proudly held it up, beaming with confidence, and his classmates cheered him on!\r\n\r\nAs we continue using these materials, our next step is integrating them into more structured learning activities. We're incorporating fine motor work into our literacy and math centers, like using clothespins to clip letters onto word cards or manipulating small objects for counting practice. These hands-on experiences are helping students develop essential pre-writing skills while keeping them engaged and excited to learn. Thanks to these resources, my students are building the strength and coordination they need for future academic success!","fullyFundedDate":1733421823315,"projectUrl":"project/fine-motor-and-social-emotional-activiti/8931871/","projectTitle":"Fine Motor and Social Emotional Activities and Practice!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Teal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8976760"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_84770","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":414,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":86,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":80,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":81.4,"schoolId":84770,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Carson Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Carson Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/newark-city-school-district/carson-elementary-school/84770"}
