I now have numerous titles that my students are genuinely excited to pick up—and that excitement has transformed the way they engage with reading.\r\n\r\nThe simple act of being able to select a book that speaks to their interest is sparking a level of motivation I don't always see with assigned texts. This is a vital step in growing life-long readers. The impact of these books goes beyond just pages read. We're only beginning the new school year, but they've already created authentic opportunities for discussion. More importantly, they've helped students see themselves in stories, and sometimes, discover new perspectives outside of their own.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has given my students the gift of choice, representation, and excitement in reading. Thank you for believing in the power of books and for investing in the growth and joy of young readers. The ripple effect of this gift will last far beyond this school year.","fullyFundedDate":1740503326001,"projectUrl":"project/diversify-ms-hibbards-classroom-librar/9084790/","projectTitle":"Diversify Ms. Hibbard's Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hibbard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3814956_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738775684005","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3814956"},{"teacherId":9917884,"projectId":9101732,"letterContent":"These books are making an instant and sizable impact in my classroom. Several student groups are enjoying creating their own dystopian societies, using the books as a guide. In particular, the Grace Year and Dry are the most popular choices. \r\n\r\nThe primary use for the books is to participate in book clubs with their peers. Through this activity, the students are learning to ask deeper level questions, make connections between texts and the real world, and make predictions about complex texts. These texts allow us to have multiple class novels going at once, so students can guide their own learning and choose books with themes and stories they are most interested in.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the book clubs, students are learning to identify key elements of the dystopian genre and annotate texts for key features: developments of characters, twists on genre elements, and major themes.\r\n\r\nThese complex texts allow us to be more current with the book selection and makes the learning more relevant to the students. The conversations and thoughts being had in this unit is deep and wouldn't have been possible without your contributions.","fullyFundedDate":1740504166751,"projectUrl":"project/mr-spurlocks-classroom/9101732/","projectTitle":"Mr. Spurlock's Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Spurlock","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9917884"},{"teacherId":9915112,"projectId":9094785,"letterContent":"I can't thank you \r\nenough for helping us add new books to our classroom library. This made a huge difference in how they approached the text. The items you provided—from the cozy Big Joe beanbag chair to the vibrant art supplies—have made a meaningful impact on our learning environment and student engagement. When my students first saw the LEGO storage boxes, the Play-Doh, and the new coloring and drawing supplies, I have never seen high schoolers so excited. They really are just big kids. These resources have helped us build a calming space where students can take brain breaks, express themselves creatively, and stay focused during independent work time.\r\n\r\nThe beanbag chair has become a favorite spot in our quiet corner, where students can read, reflect, or calm down when they feel overwhelmed. The visual timer helps students manage their focus during timed writing or test prep sessions. We recently used the Crayola markers and colored pencils during a group poetry project where students created illustrated blackout poems—combining art and literature in a way that helped even our most reluctant writers find their voice. \r\n\r\nAs we wrap up the school year, students are using these materials as we dive into our end-of-year one-pager project, where students will reflect on their learning through art, writing, and design. The two activities captured in these pictures allowed students to take ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nSeveral of our students are members of the local city youth council. To promote an event they organized, students used the mini microphones from this project to create a promotional video to engage the community and hopefully increase attendance. As a part of creating this video, students created a storyboard to plan how best to use their time and resources to promote the event. They were so excited to use the microphones because it made them feel more professional and helped them overcome the imposter syndrome so many students experience as they gain confidence. Learning to utilize media tools helped students develop their media literacy and confidence in production.\r\n\r\nIn the other photo, students used the story dice from this project to brainstorm creative short stories. Students were challenged to develop a story based on the dice images that they rolled. They enjoyed the tactile aspect of this activity and shared many laughs with their friends when they rolled challenging graphics, knowing it would create a humorous story.\r\n\r\nOverall, your generosity allowed students to challenge their creativity and further develop their skills. By bringing engaging learning tools into the classroom, students were engaged and there was a noticeable positivity in the room.","fullyFundedDate":1738941038721,"projectUrl":"project/inspiring-media-literacy-and-positive-me/9077841/","projectTitle":"Inspiring Media Literacy and Positive Mental Health","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tuggle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9788837"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_47913","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1859,"numTeachers":91,"percentFrplEligible":67,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":30,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":47913,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Carrollton High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Carrollton High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/carrollton-city-school-district/carrollton-high-school/47913"}
