Whether they are matching pictures, building new words, or sorting through themed items, they are learning important skills like reading, listening, and problem-solving. And the best part? Once we laminate them, we can use them over and over again—in centers, small groups, or even one-on-one time.\r\n\r\nTheir curiosity and enthusiasm brings these interactive stories to life. With Velcro pieces, colorful visuals, and simple, easy-to-read words, we've been able to show just how powerful hands-on learning can be. Every time we move a piece, read a sentence, or find the right match, we are practicing focus, fine motor skills, and language—all while having fun.\r\n\r\nThese books are made to support every kind of learner, and YOU are the reason we have them and can do our work so well. Those students were overjoyed to see the new material for the train the brain centers in the second grade learning area! These tools are designed to stimulate one or more of the five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—and are particularly effective in early childhood education where sensory exploration is a key component of learning. When integrated into my preschool environment, sensory materials support cognitive development, language acquisition, social-emotional skills, and fine and gross motor skills.\r\n\r\nResearch and classroom observations show that sensory play enhances focus, attention, and self-regulation—critical foundations for academic learning. Tactile toys such as textured blocks, kinetic sand, and water beads encourage exploration and problem-solving. Auditory and visual stimuli, like musical instruments and light-up toys, help children develop pattern recognition and memory. For children with sensory processing challenges or developmental delays, these materials provide essential opportunities for regulated sensory input, reducing anxiety and fostering engagement.\r\n\r\nIn group settings, sensory activities promote cooperative play and communication, aligning with key educational goals like social interaction and language development. Additionally, sensory materials are inclusive, supporting differentiated instruction and accommodating a range of learning styles and needs.\r\n\r\nOverall, sensory toys and materials are not just tools for play—they are essential educational supports that foster foundational skills across all developmental domains, preparing preschool students for future academic success.","fullyFundedDate":1738355911095,"projectUrl":"project/spectacular-sensory-play/9000167/","projectTitle":"Spectacular Sensory Play","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jami","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9812454"},{"teacherId":9812454,"projectId":8896678,"letterContent":"Recently we have been utilizing the Tot-Tube with different materials. I have multiple students with autism and they love to dump and watch things fall, so this item has been a huge hit. It allows for them to drop with a purpose. We have used sensory bin items, cars, balls and just about anything that will fit in the opening. With the center being see through, they love watching it pass through before it hits the bottom or comes out the end. An upcoming lesson I will be using it along with our transportation unit. I plan to incorporate the tube, cars and wooden arches to allow for more intentional play and dropping. The students will listen to directions, drop the car in the tube and aim for the arches. This will allow for them to slow down and follow directions and use visual tracking/motor skills. This helps our students move from the sensory exploration of toys and objects to the next phase, which is one-step functional play. Other items that we have used have included the mystery box, puzzles and my socials emotional books. We have used the puzzles alongside the mystery box to pull out each piece as a surprise for find where it goes. The social emotional books have aloud for me to work on needed goals with all of my students on identifying emotions, how to use our hands for helpful tasks and building on classroom curriculum that is already be incorporated. Lastly, the rolling tote has made my travel so much smoother between centers and being able to take my materials to each center much more doable.","fullyFundedDate":1734109798125,"projectUrl":"project/the-traveling-special-educator/8896678/","projectTitle":"The Traveling Special Educator","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jami","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9812454"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83384","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":803,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":59,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":94,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"26.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":80.9,"schoolId":83384,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Carrollton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Carrollton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/carrollton-exempted-village-school-district/carrollton-elementary-school/83384"}
