We were able to get reeds for our woodwind players to last for a while this year. Without reeds our clarinet and saxophone players aren't able to play their instrument. \r\n\r\nWe have over 160 students in the middle school band. Of the 160 students about 45 of them play either clarinet or saxophone. The reeds have given them an opportunity to have the supplies they need in the classroom without worrying about running out of supplies.\r\n\r\nYour donation helps us to keep music alive in Carroll County. Band is expensive but I believe it is impactful, and I truly am grateful for your support in my classroom. While independent reading of this nature is good, and while students do still have time and opportunity to do that, we have been able to level up our independent reading by focusing it around the units that students are working on in their core English class.\r\n\r\nThe books that your donation allowed us to purchase -- The Breadwinner, The Parker Inheritance, and Dragonwings -- show characters who have to face fears and show courage in different situations. This lines up perfectly with the fiction and nonfiction texts that students are reading in class, which have to do everything from the anatomy of the brain to peer pressure.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the books being on-theme, they are also selected by our curriculum as recommendations due to the complexity of the text being appropriate for our students. As a classroom teacher, I cannot tell you how helpful it is for text selection to be handled this way. It makes a world of difference when it comes to student achievement. As you can see from the photos sent out we were able to have our Christmas concert in December. We also were able to go-to the local nursing home and play for the residents some exciting Christmas carols. \r\n\r\nIt is difficult getting funding, but your donation has gotten us enough reeds for saxes, and clarinets to survive the majority of the year without worry. My students know how expensive reeds can cost and were overjoyed when I told them we have new supplies of reeds and percussion sticks. Many times the sticks our percussionist play with are broken or we don't have enough for all players, but now with our new set of sticks we are covered.\r\nMy students look forward to making exciting music and coming to the band everyday. Looking forward we hope to return to the nursing home in the spring and take many opportunities playing music for the community.
