Books like Round is a Tortilla, Courageous Camila, and Marisol McDonald and the Clash Bash have helped my students explore language through diversity, while strengthening reading comprehension and vocabulary in both English and Spanish. Through these texts, my scholars are learning to identify themes, connect personally with characters, and reflect on the importance of representation.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom is a vibrant moment of discovery. Students sit in small groups, share favorite lines aloud, and complete bilingual reading guides that ask them to summarize, analyze, and create. I often see them smiling as they make connections between their own lives and the stories we read—recognizing their families, foods, or traditions reflected on the pages. For many, it's the first time they've seen themselves in a book.\r\n\r\nOne of my students, who was initially reluctant to read, has become deeply engaged with Fry Bread and Thank You... It's an Afro, proudly explaining to the class how stories can teach pride and love for one's roots. These books are not only improving literacy skills—they are also nurturing confidence, empathy, and curiosity. Every page reminds my students that their voices matter and that reading can be both joyful and empowering.\r\n\r\nSpanish Illuminator, Capital Prep Bronx","fullyFundedDate":1758899213640,"projectUrl":"project/lets-go-to-read-in-spanish/9749388/","projectTitle":"Let’s Go to Read in Spanish","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bellott","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10275167_orig.jpg?crop=1290,1290,x0,y124&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758647630751","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10275167"},{"teacherId":9606152,"projectId":8838967,"letterContent":"I want to sincerely thank you for the thoughtful gifts you provided, which have made a meaningful difference in my classroom.
