My students have enjoyed the beautiful books, and the books have inspired some amazing projects and STEAM units. I wanted to take some time and highlight what we did with just TWO books!\r\n\r\nFirst, we read \"After the fall,\" an inspiring book about not giving up even when you are afraid. Students kicked off the unit by designing digital word art projects by using theme words such as: Grit, Perseverance, Hope, Courage, and Strength (just to name a few). We then added physics and math into the mix with an egg drop activity. Students learned about Newton's Laws of physics and used that information to design a contraption to keep their egg safe. The classes calculated their velocity of the egg falling and then wrote a five-paragraph essay using physics and math vocabulary. \r\n\r\nOur second unit was \"Be a Maker.\" Students learned about electricity and how countries like Spain actually use excess fruit to supplement their electricity use. Then, we experimented with circuit making and used fruits to generate electricity and run a watch. It was incredible! After that, we kicked off our school's second annual winter festival. Students in my class designed beautiful posters and decorations to transform our atrium! Groups of students planned stations that featured their favorite games from around the world. Students and staff members visited the festival during lunch, and they had an absolute blast! Kids and staff were laughing and learning together. We collected feedback, and many students wanted to not only do the festival again but create their own tables with our class. One respondent said, \"I love this school!\" So, my students were COMMUNITY makers!\r\n\r\nAll that was inspired by just two books with many more on the way! This would not have been possible without your generosity!","fullyFundedDate":1728700314099,"projectUrl":"project/steam-project-mentor-texts-to-inspire-es/8838928/","projectTitle":"STEAM Project Mentor Texts to Inspire ESOL Students!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Valen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9695116"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64493","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1080,"numTeachers":69,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":63.0,"schoolId":64493,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Calvert High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Calvert High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/calvert-county-public-school-district/calvert-high-school/64493"}
