Many of my students come to class early in the morning or stay focused for long stretches of time, and having access to snacks has helped them stay energized, calm, and ready to learn. We often use snack time strategically—either during independent reading, small-group instruction, or while working on longer projects—so students can refuel without disrupting learning. One moment that really stood out to me was during a group research activity when a student who usually struggles with focus was able to stay engaged and contribute ideas after having a quick snack. It reminded me how something seemingly small can make a big difference in students' ability to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks, their reaction was pure excitement and gratitude. Several students asked if the snacks were \"really for us,\" and others immediately said thank you and shared how hungry they felt before class. Beyond the excitement, I noticed a sense of relief—students felt cared for and supported. The snacks helped create a more positive classroom environment where students could focus on learning instead of distractions caused by hunger.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students are now able to fully engage in our current lessons, including collaborative reading and source evaluation projects where sustained focus is key. Our next steps involve continuing these lessons through group discussions, presentations, and written reflections that require students to think critically and work together. Because their basic needs are being met, students are better prepared to participate, take academic risks, and grow as learners. Many of my students read the books. They were able to have literature circles; a small group of students reading the same book and having in depth conversations about the book and how it relatives to them and the community. \r\nAdditionally the students were able to check the books out from the classroom library for a longer time than the regular library, so they had more time to read it at their pace. Many students bought the books for their own library. As an educator, I saw a love for reading reignited for my students through these beautiful books. \r\nTeaching at a Title 1 school most of our students do not get exposed enough to a wide variety of vocabulary and different types of sentence structure and dialogue. I was able to use the snacks in a variety of ways. I would use them as motivational tools, rewards, or even just to feed a hungry belly. I work in an area that serves a lower socio-economic status community so I know that not every home has food in the pantry. For my students that come to school hungry, they know they can come to me for a snack to hold them over until lunch.\r\nI have also learned that this age level (11-12 years) is greatly motivated by food! When they know food is the reward, they are far more likely to raise their hands to answer questions, share their ideas, or present to the class. They are growing like weeds at this age and need near-constant nurishment.\r\nIt also provides a way for me to build a relationship with my students. By providing them with a basic need, they learn they can trust me and can come to me with other things as well.\r\nThank you very much for your donations. The things the student shared about their mothers and families were truly heartwarming. Unexpectedly they also shared how this group became role models for them when they were lacking them in their own lives.
