Our school is over 100 years old and the furniture has not been updated in decades. I believe all students deserve to learn in a nice environment with comfortable furniture that meets our needs. The new table is sturdy and will last a long time. I teach 8th grade science in a room designed in the 1970s for photography. It's a challenge. My students are fantastic, however, and I love working to make our environment nicer and more engaging. Eighth grades love to work in groups. They don't get to do that often in their other classes so science tends to be their favorite time of the day (aside from lunch or PE). My goal is to replace old furniture a little at a time until the room has all new. I got sample chairs from a local vendor and replaced the ones that were over 20 years old. I paid for this myself. Teachers pay for a lot of things to make our classrooms warm and inviting for students. Thank you for helping make our classroom beautiful.","fullyFundedDate":1755371358649,"projectUrl":"project/activity-table-for-super-science-student/9391158/","projectTitle":"Activity Table for Super Science Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lentz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7605968_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725116799583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7605968"},{"teacherId":7605968,"projectId":9148475,"letterContent":"I am so thankful that you were able to donate to my classroom. Our school is very old - built in 1922, and our facilities have not been kept up to date. My students love to work in groups so the new activity table provides plenty of space for them to construct STEM projects and work with each other. I've been fortunate to secure sample chairs from a local company so I could remove the chairs that were over 20 years old and made awful clanging sounds on the tile floor. The new table combined with these chairs makes my classroom a cut above the rest of the school. I want my students to learn in a place that meets their needs and provides a comfortable space for them to learn. We are loving a spring filled with STEM and creative thinking. The weather turned warm and the sun is shining. Students are dreaming of summer. Keeping their attention with textbooks this time of year is a real struggle. Instead I like them to use their problem solving skills in a variety of STEM challenges. Our bridge building project is the type of thing that engages even the most reluctant learner. It is my goal that they leave my class with a love for engineering practices regardless of their career interests down the road. Thank you for your generosity. We are limited in basic supplies yet your generosity has made a tremendous impact in the quality of engagement we have had this spring. Our Stem Basics donors choose project included the things we need to do hands on learning, building models, creating new ways to share information and show what we know and are able to do. Spring is a challenging time for any educator but when I can share an engaging project with students they forget about being anxious for summer for a little bit and do a fantastic job participating in class. Thank you for supporting our students' education. They look forward to days when we break out the popsicle sticks and hot glue to build things. We had a lengthy discussion about safety of the UV light because 8th graders like to think it's funny do do the exact opposite of safety procedures. I was concerned someone would shine the light in their eyes. But I was pleasantly surprised that the students were on their best behavior and took care to place the rocks back into their places so they wouldn't get lost or mislabeled. Thank you for supporting my classroom and giving me an opportunity to share some engaging materials with my students. It's getting to be the spring of the school year with all the excitement that comes with that. They are anxious for summer and all the fun activities that they love. I appreciate your generosity. I'd like to take a moment to thank you for the donations you made to my classroom. We received various stem supplies for labs and activities this fall. My students have made crystals when we studied minerals, they have explored magnetic fields with brand new magnet kits and bent light with the prisms on the occasion that we get a sunny day here in Michigan this winter. I plan to also use the prisms to show them how they can take photos with their phones and create some interesting images with the prisms out in nature. When students have fun and engaging things to do in science class it keeps them guessing about what is coming next and increases the engagement in our lessons. I also received some plastic trays which have been helpful. Around Christmas time I taught my 8th grade students how to make a blanket stitch on felt and they made ornaments for their parents. The trays kept their projects organized between classes. It was interesting to see them learn a new skill along with their science learning. I truly am grateful for the generosity you've shown toward our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1731528715555,"projectUrl":"project/science-comes-alive-with-labs/8931275/","projectTitle":"Science Comes Alive With Labs","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lentz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7605968_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725116799583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7605968"},{"teacherId":7605968,"projectId":8928033,"letterContent":"My students were thrilled to have brand new goggles in a variety of colors to show off their science skills. As a rural school, we don't have the best and newest equipment and I felt sad asking them to wear really old worn out goggles whenever we used glass or chemicals. Now they have their own goggles and have some pride in their appearance while doing science work in class. We leveled up our science game here in 8th grade science. Some of the things we've been able to do since the donation are a series of chemical reactions where they saw color changes, formation of a gas, formation of a precipitate and temperature changes. Students are learning lab skills right along with the skills necessary to think critically in the class. My Senior English students read the novel together in class followed by discussions and analysis. The images paired with Mary Shelley's descriptive language helped bring the book to life. This is the most engagement I've seen from students with a classic text in many years. It was refreshing.\r\n\r\nMy Honors Senior English students read both the original text and the graphic novel. They admitted that the graphic novel kept them engaged while the original text challenged them and filled in the blanks. Students then participated in a whole class discussion in which they could provide their opinions and takeaways from the novel. Students were assigned chapters from the original and presented on the differences between the two books. At the end of the unit, my Honors kids contemplated Victor's role in the novel's deaths and conducted a mock trial. \r\n\r\nNone of this would have been possible without your generous donation. I have genuinely enjoyed working with my students as they make connections between a two-hundred-year old text and today's world.","fullyFundedDate":1729113330208,"projectUrl":"project/breathing-life-back-into-frankenstein-th/8873006/","projectTitle":"Breathing Life Back into Frankenstein through Gris Grimly's Adaptation","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Neal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9801537_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y60&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728660824753","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9801537"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_66676","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":561,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":87,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"8 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":66676,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Buchanan High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Buchanan High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/buchanan-community-school-district/buchanan-high-school/66676"}
