Reading in my classroom will continue to look different for every learner... some students will gravitate toward graphic novels and manga, while others will connect with historical fiction, fantasy, or realistic fiction. These new texts will help introduce and strengthen important literacy skills such as analyzing character development, identifying theme, making inferences, comparing perspectives, and evaluating how authors develop conflict and mood. Many of these books will also encourage important conversations about identity, resilience, justice, empathy, and perseverance.\r\n\r\nI especially appreciate that this project is being supported in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, and the commitment to uplifting Jewish identities while working toward combating antisemitism. Books like Night and Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued will allow students to engage with Holocaust history in a human-centered way, helping them better understand the importance of empathy, remembrance, and standing against hatred. These texts will give students opportunities to reflect on how history connects to present-day issues and how stories can preserve truth and dignity.\r\n\r\nI anticipate that these books will especially support students who have struggled to find joy and confidence in reading. Manga series like One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, and Vinland Saga will provide engaging entry points for reluctant readers and help build reading stamina through highly motivating storytelling. At the same time, books like Some Girls Do, Nick and Charlie, The Cost of Knowing, and The Way I Used to Be will help students see diverse identities and experiences represented in literature, creating a more inclusive classroom library where all students can feel seen and valued. I know many students will be excited simply to have access to books and genres they have been asking for but may not have access to outside of school.\r\n\r\nThese new texts will also help strengthen the connections between independent reading and our classroom curriculum. Books like The Outsiders, Divergent, and An Ember in the Ashes will support discussions about society, belonging, and personal choices, while graphic novels like The Crossover and Snow White and the Seven Robots will provide accessible and engaging reading opportunities for students with varying learning needs and reading levels. Because of this project, my students will have more opportunities to discover a love of reading, develop stronger literacy skills, and build meaningful connections with literature.","fullyFundedDate":1778505073610,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-student-book-haven/10270102/","projectTitle":"Building a Student Book Haven","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":10171340,"letterContent":"These materials will completely transform the organization and daily flow of my classroom, allowing students to focus more on learning and less on logistics. The rolling storage cart, pencil boxes, and desk organizers will give every student a clearly defined place for supplies, which will streamline transitions and reduce lost time. During a recent writing workshop, for example, students will be able to quickly gather highlighters, pens, and pencils from organized stations and move straight into annotating mentor texts and drafting their literary analysis paragraphs. The electric pencil sharpener will also eliminate long lines and disruptions, keeping students engaged and on task.\r\n\r\nWhen students first see these materials, I anticipate a lot of excitement...especially around the colorful pens, pastel highlighters, and neon dry erase markers. These tools will make everyday tasks feel more engaging and personalized, which can have a powerful impact on motivation. Students will also feel a sense of ownership and pride in having organized, accessible materials. For many, simply having what they need readily available helps reduce stress and allows them to focus more fully on their work.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these resources will support our ongoing work in close reading, annotation, and structured writing. Students will use the highlighters and pens to track themes, identify textual evidence, and organize their thinking in a clear, visual way. The storage systems will also make it easier to implement small group instruction and station-based learning, where students rotate through activities focused on reading, writing, and discussion. Ultimately, these materials will help create a more efficient, engaging, and student-centered classroom where learners can build strong habits and grow as confident readers and writers.","fullyFundedDate":1778061956277,"projectUrl":"project/the-tools-my-students-need-to-learn-ever/10171340/","projectTitle":"The Tools My Students Need to Learn Every Day","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":10265093,"letterContent":"These resources will play an important role in supporting both the physical comfort and overall well-being of my students, which directly impacts their ability to learn. The ice maker will be especially helpful during warmer days or after physical activity, allowing students to quickly cool down and refocus. I will also use ice as a simple way to support students who may feel overwhelmed or need a quick sensory reset, helping them return to learning more calmly. The bandages will ensure that minor cuts and scrapes can be handled quickly and discreetly, minimizing disruptions and helping students feel cared for and safe in the classroom environment.\r\n\r\nWhen students see these materials, I anticipate both excitement and a sense of reassurance. The fun, kid-friendly bandage designs will make students feel more comfortable when small injuries happen, while access to ice will feel like a thoughtful and supportive addition to our classroom. These small but meaningful resources help build trust and show students that their needs (both academic and physical) are valued. Moments like quickly helping a student who got a paper cut or offering ice to someone who isn't feeling well will allow learning to continue with minimal interruption.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, these supplies will support a classroom environment where students can stay focused on their learning without being sidetracked by discomfort or avoidable disruptions. As we continue with reading and writing workshops, students will be able to remain present and engaged because their basic needs are being met efficiently. Creating this kind of supportive environment allows me to spend more time on instruction, discussion, and feedback, while students can fully invest in their growth as readers, writers, and members of our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1778061865247,"projectUrl":"project/from-ouch-to-okay-caring-for-students-e/10265093/","projectTitle":"From Ouch to Okay: Caring for Students Every Day","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":10188347,"letterContent":"These classroom supplies will make an immediate and meaningful impact on my students' daily learning routines. The variety of pencils (scented, color-changing, and bendy) will also serve as engaging tools for motivation and positive reinforcement. For example, during our writing workshops, students will be able to choose a \"special\" pencil to use while drafting their paragraphs, which will help build excitement around writing and encourage even reluctant writers to get started.\r\n\r\nWhen students see these materials, I anticipate a lot of excitement and curiosity. Something as simple as a scented or color-changing pencil can make a big difference in how students feel about their work. These tools will help create a classroom environment that feels fun, supportive, and student-centered. I will also use them as part of our classroom reward system, recognizing effort, growth, and positive participation. Moments like earning a unique pencil after a strong discussion or completing a writing goal will help reinforce positive academic behaviors and build student confidence.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, these supplies will support our ongoing writing and reading units by ensuring all students are prepared and engaged. As we continue working on literary analysis and paragraph writing, students will use these materials daily to annotate texts, draft responses, and revise their work. Having reliable and engaging tools will allow me to focus more on instruction and feedback, while students stay focused on developing their skills as readers and writers. Ultimately, this project will help create a more organized, equitable, and motivating learning environment where every student has what they need to succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1778015610190,"projectUrl":"project/from-bendy-to-scented-making-writing-ex/10188347/","projectTitle":"From Bendy to Scented: Making Writing Exciting!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":10188329,"letterContent":"With the support of these new texts, my classroom will expand into a space where students are not only reading for comprehension, but also analyzing complex characters, themes, and author choices across different genres. The Hunger Games: Illustrated Edition will help students strengthen skills in close reading, inference, and visual-text analysis as they connect imagery to meaning and deeper themes like power, survival, and control. The Invincible Compendium volumes will allow students to engage with a longer, more complex graphic narrative where they can track character development over time, analyze dialogue and pacing, and make connections between visual storytelling and traditional text evidence. These books will also support lessons in theme development, characterization, and citing textual evidence to support claims.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading is highly interactive and discussion-based. Students will read independently, in pairs, and in small groups, often stopping to annotate, ask questions, and discuss key moments. We regularly use structured conversation routines where students practice using evidence from the text to support their thinking, and these new books will deepen those conversations by giving students more engaging and accessible entry points into complex ideas. Graphic novels in particular will support visual learners and students who may benefit from alternative pathways into comprehension and analysis.\r\n\r\nI anticipate that these texts will be especially engaging for students who are sometimes reluctant readers, particularly those who connect strongly with visual storytelling or action-driven narratives. Students who enjoy graphic novels will likely gravitate toward Invincible, while others will be drawn into the familiar but deeper illustrated version of The Hunger Games. These books will help students see themselves as capable, confident readers by meeting them where they are while still pushing them toward rigorous analytical thinking and meaningful discussion.","fullyFundedDate":1778015767288,"projectUrl":"project/books-that-matter-helping-students-fall/10188329/","projectTitle":"Books That Matter: Helping Students Fall in Love with Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":10139166,"letterContent":"When this classroom rug arrives, it will immediately transform how my students experience learning together. We will use it as a designated community space for whole-group instruction, read-alouds, Socratic discussions, and partner conversations. Instead of being confined to desks all day, students will be able to sit in assigned \"criss-cross applesauce\" spots that promote equal participation, clearer sightlines, and a stronger sense of belonging. This will be especially powerful during our novel studies, where students will gather on the rug to analyze texts like The Outsiders and Night through discussion, annotation talk, and evidence-based questioning. It will also serve as a calm, structured space for restorative conversations and community-building activities that support inclusive learning for all needs and accommodations.\r\n\r\nWhen students first see the rug in the classroom, I expect a genuine sense of excitement and ownership. Many of them will immediately notice the bright, welcoming design and ask if they can sit on it right away. For some students, having a clearly defined, comfortable learning space like this will make participation feel more accessible and less intimidating than traditional desk-based discussion. It will also help establish routines quickly: students will learn where to sit, how to transition, and how to engage respectfully in shared space. That structure combined with comfort will help build confidence, especially for students who benefit from movement, sensory support, or alternative seating options.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, this rug will become central to how we launch and sustain deeper academic conversations. Our next steps include using it for close reading discussions where students cite textual evidence, practice academic discourse stems, and build on each other's ideas in structured talk. It will also be used during writing workshops, where students can brainstorm, peer conference, and reflect on their ideas in a collaborative environment. Ultimately, this resource will strengthen classroom community while supporting rigorous ELA learning, helping students feel both grounded and engaged as thinkers and readers.","fullyFundedDate":1777994131713,"projectUrl":"project/comfortable-classroom-circles-a-rug-to/10139166/","projectTitle":"Comfortable Classroom Circles: A Rug to Inspire and Engage","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":10078031,"letterContent":"Because of this project, reading in our classroom will shift into something much more engaging, accessible, and student-driven. Once these graphic novels and instructional materials arrive, they will help create a reading environment where all students, regardless of reading level or confidence, can access complex texts and meaningful ideas. I anticipate that students who have previously struggled with traditional novels will finally be able to enter discussions with confidence because the visual support in these texts will help them better understand plot, character development, and theme.\r\n\r\nThese resources will allow us to explicitly teach and strengthen important literacy skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, analyzing character change over time, and using textual evidence to support ideas. With texts like The Giver, 1984, Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Great Gatsby in graphic novel form, students will be able to focus more deeply on analysis rather than becoming stuck on decoding or comprehension barriers. The instructional guides will also support structured close reading, helping students learn how to slow down, notice details, and think critically about author choices.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading will look like students actively collaborating: pointing out visual details in graphic panels, discussing symbolism, and debating interpretations with evidence from the text. I expect to see more students willing to participate in discussions because they will feel more confident entering the text at different entry points. Instead of frustration or avoidance, I anticipate curiosity and conversation becoming the norm.\r\n\r\nI am especially excited for the impact this will have on students who have not yet found books that connect with them. The variety of genres and stories, from dystopian fiction like Unwind to memoir-style narratives like Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game, will give students multiple ways to see themselves in literature. I believe these books will help reluctant readers see themselves as capable, successful readers for the first time, which will ultimately increase both engagement and achievement across the board.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project will help transform reading from something students complete into something they experience, discuss, and look forward to each day.","fullyFundedDate":1778062027303,"projectUrl":"project/power-up-our-readers/10078031/","projectTitle":"Power Up Our Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whiteman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736187_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744907757656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/whiteman"},{"teacherId":9736187,"projectId":9929395,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has become a more comfortable, organized, and supportive learning environment for every student. Through books like Speak: The Graphic Novel, Illegal: A Graphic Novel, and American Born Chinese, students are building critical literacy skills such as analyzing theme, identifying tone and mood, and evaluating how visual elements contribute to meaning. These texts allow students to practice close reading in a way that feels accessible while still challenging them to think deeply about complex topics like identity, justice, and resilience.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now looks active and student-centered.
