My students have been doing such amazing work with this book. I have been so impressed by the ways that they have been making connections with poems across the collection. That was one of the primary goals of the unit, and my awesome students have done an even better job with it than I had hoped they would. One of my favorite parts of this unit has been listening to the discussions that students have been having in their small groups as they read and analyze the work. There have been debates over the connotations of words in certain lines and the potential meanings of symbols - all things that make an English teacher feel all warm and fuzzy inside. \r\n\r\nAs with most meaningful learning, working with this text has come with some growing pains. Clint Smith is an author who gives his readers so much to work with, but he also asks that they engage in the conversation as well. My students have risen to the challenge and are currently in the process of writing their most in-depth and insightful analysis essays of the entire semester. I am just so incredibly proud of them. \r\n\r\nThank you to everyone who helped make this project possible.","fullyFundedDate":1726592890145,"projectUrl":"project/making-poetry-count-with-clint-smiths-c/8792130/","projectTitle":"Making Poetry Count with Clint Smith's Counting Descent","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zimmerman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jennyzimmerman"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25378","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":214,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":52,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":93,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":70.2,"schoolId":25378,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Brown County High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Brown County High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/brown-county-community-unit-school-district-1/brown-co-high-school/25378"}
