As planned, we were able to start off our mornings (before the school day officially begins) with games and activities available at every table. I'm not exaggerating when I say that during every single morning, some kind of joy percolates through the room before class has even begun. Uno and Connect 4 are the traditional hits, but this new game, Tetra Tower, is also fantastic. It's kind of like Jenga, so kids can kind of circle around while it's happening and join in or cheer on participants. The game ends with a predictable tower collapse and crash, which of course is also joyous! \r\n\r\nOver the last few years, I've felt that teens were kind of \"zombie-ing out\" with the pandemic isolation at first and then the increase of cell phone usage later. In contrast, these spontaneous and friendly moments generated by these games pave the way for relationship-building. Besides just being enjoyable of course, this kind of human interaction is essential for the English classroom. For example, in our class we always do peer response activities and a lot of group and whole-class discussions. If a friendly vibe has already been established, this is so much easier. \r\n\r\nI've had to experiment a bit more with the fancy cubes of questions. Since I noticed students didn't really gravitate toward those cubes, I incorporated them a few times at the start of a lesson. Instead of starting with a \"mindful moment,\" we've started with an icebreaker: \"Everyone grab a question that you can ask your table-mates!\" . I've also observed that games like Uno are helpful when kids don't know each other at all, because everyone is familiar with those games. The cubes of questions are getting used more after I've introduced them and after students have a baseline of comfort with their peers. I imagine the teenage brain is thinking: \"Now that I know you are a safe person with whom I can play a game, maybe I want to know more about you! How about this question?!\" Those question cubes were pricey - about $23 each. (Thank you donors!) However, while the Uno cards can get chewed up by the end of the year, these question cubes are beautiful and slick and durable. They will last me forever. \r\n\r\nLast but not least, our students are benefiting from 2 incredible changes: the statewide cell phone ban and statewide initiative to reduce class size. While the news is often so hard to read, I thought I'd share that these new policies (and funding of those policies) are actually helping students build relationships with each other and creating a positive impact - more positive fuel for our phone-free mornings. Who knew!? \r\n\r\nAgain thank you donors for your generosity and helping our year start with joy, positivity and human connection. I appreciate you! Attached are some pictures as well. To protect student privacy, I didn't include faces and you can't hear the fun student chatter. I'm also a better writer than photographer, but I'm hoping you can feel the happy vibe.","fullyFundedDate":1755563660267,"projectUrl":"project/phone-free-fun-fostering-friendly-teen/9606029/","projectTitle":"Phone-Free Fun: Fostering Friendly Teen Spaces","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bueckert-Chan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp565201_orig.jpg?crop=2406,2406,x311,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1669578583814","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/565201"},{"teacherId":8982321,"projectId":9107175,"letterContent":"Hello from the new 2025 PSAL Stunt Champions! Oh, and in the spring, it would jam when too many students returned books at the end of the semester! \r\n\r\nNeedless to say, we are thrilled to have a much larger, more appropriate book return bin.
