Some said it felt like I big sleep over amongst friends. This was the first time for many of these students to go on a trip where they spend the night away from home. Students don't have to feel embarrassed if they forgot a deodorant at home or if their family just couldn't afford to give them one. They know they can stop at my classroom and I will have something for available. They have many instances were a student did not have a great day and just wanted somewhere to sit that wasn't just your typical cold metal chair. Sometimes kids would come to me during lunchtime to sit in the beanbag chair and just sit in silence. The bean bag was also a place where kids could come and sit the beanbag and share highlights of their day, things that were going well in their life, or things that probably weren't going so well. \r\nI've had students who I didn't directly teach hear about my beanbag and asked to come and sit in it. It's amazing one beanbag chair can mean so many different things to so many people. I really appreciate your donations and so do my students. we appreciate the manipulatives that all came together to buy as well. Students have used them during a quiz when they were anxious, they've used them while they came to visit during lunchtime. Students to borrow them so that they can use other classes, and then return them. I have used the resources to incentivize math tutoring during lunch and after school. Student attendance has increased now that my co-teacher and I can provide snacks to our students. Math tutoring has gained a set of students who have become \"regulars\" and their consistent attendance has led to growth in their test scores. The donated snacks help cultivate a fun, low-stakes, environment where students can get their math work done in a safe and positive space. \r\n\r\nMy students were very excited when they first saw the snacks. They now know that if they are hungry, they can always come to the geometry classroom for a \"pick-me-up\" snack. The next step for my classroom is to capitalize on the increased attendance during afterschool tutoring by inviting targeted students for state exam prep. State exam prep begins after spring break and this will allow students to get that small-group instruction.
