In the end, the English department chose a different book for their curriculum unit. Having already received the books purchased with your generous donation, I decided to pivot and start an after-school library book club. Although schedules prevented many students from attending, so many students have borrowed copies of the book that I have very few left! The books you bought are reaching kids.\r\n\r\nI have a dedicated group of students who attend our weekly book club, which has increased steadily each week. For any interested students, attending or not, I maintain a Google Classroom with videos, articles, pictures, and other interesting tidbits related to that week's section of the book. For example, in the second week we read that it didn't occur to anyone that the Mona LIsa was stolen even after they saw it missing from the wall because they thought it had been taken to be photographed. That week in our Google Classroom, I included a video on the invention of photography that contextualized why it was such an exciting fad around the time of the Mona Lisa's theft. (Students are watching that video in one of my photos.) We often watch these videos or look at pictures during our club, and the discussion enriches our understanding of the book's subject. However, this past week, the students were all tired and heading for April vacation soon...they asked if we could just spend the time reading the book, so we did - for a full 40 minutes! In an era when students are constantly enticed by electronic entertainment, it is so gratifying to hear them *ask* to read.\r\n\r\nThe books you purchased will have other uses beyond our book club. Librarians at the other two middle schools in my district have expressed interest in borrowing them for their own book clubs as well. I will, of course, keep these available for our English department so that that have access to them for the original purpose if so desired in the future. And the fact that we have them has led to a possible virtual visit by the author, who may be able to speak with my students. I am hopeful. Thank you for making these things possible.","fullyFundedDate":1735405224629,"projectUrl":"project/history-and-mystery-the-mona-lisa-vanis/8973020/","projectTitle":"History and Mystery: The Mona Lisa Vanishes for 7th Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pires","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9848530"},{"teacherId":9848530,"projectId":8968900,"letterContent":"My project supplied resources for three monthly library \"crafternoons.\" So far, we've done two of them and are starting the third this month. We meet on Wednesdays after school. I have a faithful crew of \"regulars\" as well as others who have dropped in just once or twice.\r\n\r\nThe kids love that the craft is quick enough that they can make more than one before our time is over. The simple crafts serve as a great excuse for students to hang out and chat with friends in a safe place after school. Students at my school come from diverse backgrounds, and it's a joy to see them interacting and sharing their worldviews.\r\n\r\nI am not very crafty myself, but the kids have eagerly jumped in to suggest ideas for the next round of crafts that I should offer. It's clear that they want our crafternoons to continue.
