For several years, we have had student Maker Spaces but most of the stations were designed for grades 3rd-5th. I wanted to develop stations that even our youngest students in Pre-School could use and your generous donations allowed me to do just that.\r\n In the library we have 4 stations (Science, Engineering, Math and Art) that students rotate through on a weekly basis. Students are divided into teams of 2 or 3 and teams visits one center each week. After 4 weeks, I change the activities still sticking with the general themes of Science, Engineering, Math and Art.\r\n The first round of stations this fall included play clay in the Science center where students had to build a vessel that could hold water. In the Engineering center, they used snap-it blocks to create the tallest free-standing structure they could manage. In the math center, students used Duplo blocks to create mathematical patterns (ABA, AABBC) and in the Art center, they did simple origami to make paper balloons. \r\n It is so exciting to all of us that even our littlest learners can now participate in these hands-on learning experiences. They're thriving and learning not only how to think creatively but also how to work with others. Students rotate each week in teams of 3 to create/build/explore at their station. These four STEM station activities remain consistent for 4 weeks, so all students have a chance to rotate to every station. \r\n In the Science center we have building materials and students worked in teams to create the most stable structure that would stand independently. Before the time was up, they had to measure and record the height of their structure. In the Technology center students used magformer magnets to test and record the properties of magnetism. Using the knowledge they gained, they build structures to meet given requirements. In the Engineering station, students used small snap circuits to create vehicles. The vehicles had to have at least 2 wheels. Students photograph their vehicle and the photos are displayed throughout the library for the month. The Math station incorporates mathematical patterns and art. \r\n Students are enjoying all the Maker Space Fun thanks to your generosity.
