Almost on a daily basis students ask \"Are we going to the garden today\"? We havn't even planted anything yet! We are in phase one, where we are cleaning it up, and about to lay down soil. Students have planted seeds in the classroom and are growing seedlings of beans, radish, milkweed, California wildflowers and lima beans. We are starting small but lookng forward to growing more things. I have two other teachers working with their classes to plant things, including one of our special needs classes. \r\n\r\nStudents are painting rocks to decorate the garden, and we are also planning on having a mock cemetary for our Day of the Dead Cultural night at the end of October. \r\n\r\nStudents are excited to put on their gloves, grab a tool and help clear weeds, break up soil, move old weed barrier and just be outside. Many of the kids who struggle in class are flourishing in the garden. Stusents can use it to take a break, study in a more relaxed setting, and as an incentive to want to come to class and get a turn on the couch! It makes the room feel more inviting and the students love it! \r\n\r\nI have students popping in during breaks to sit for a few minutes, we get to visit and it helps build relationships.
