They help kids understand the structure of DNA (& RNA) because they physically build it, and match up the bases, & twist the 2 strands together. The hardest part is finding all the little pieces that they drop. (Emphasis on *little*!)\r\n\r\nGenetics is a hard concept because molecules are invisible, even huge ones like DNA when it's condensed into chromosomes. Then, Surprise! Nice frog specimens for the end of the year!\r\n\r\nWe tied together traits & habitats & natural selection, genes & organ systems & comparative anatomy. A few of the frogs even had undeveloped eggs! Some kids thought it was really interesting, others not so much - the normal range of responses.\r\n\r\nSo thanks for helping my biology kids cap off the year. Most kids like them but then there's the kids who really need them, the ones that get in trouble with too much energy. Wobble stools give them an outlet for that energy & allow all of us to focus on the science.\r\n\r\nI goofed on the colors, tho - Now we've got the school colors of our next-town-over rivals rather than a mix of bright obnoxious easy-to-find-under-tables colors.
