When students first walked in this year, many hadn't read a full book in years—or couldn't recall the last book they truly enjoyed. Now, those same students are actively reading during daily independent reading time, swapping recommendations with each other, and even asking if they can check out books to take home. These books that were donated covered many fiction and non-fiction genre which means there is something for every reader on my shelves now! \r\n\r\nThis project didn't just fill an empty bookshelf, but it ignited curiosity, opened doors to empathy and understanding, and helped students reconnect with the joy of reading. Many students have expressed surprise at how much they're enjoying their books, and several have already finished multiple titles from our new collection. Your donation made this shift possible. My students were overwhelmed that strangers actually cared about their needs. \r\nMy students helped me inventory the goods and checked every packing label with me. As a team, we created a system for the students to receive snacks throughout the day while sticking to a form of order. We were able to have mini-celebrations on Fridays when students turned in successful grade checks, bringing a much-needed sense of celebration into the school environment, which is rare for my students who struggle in a typical general education learning environment. We also were able to use the grant supplies (i.e.-snacks) as a tool to teach our students proper social skills and communication skills. \r\nUsing Donors Choose has been an amazing experience for me as a veteran teacher, and for my students, who experienced the joy of being on the receiving end of great citizenship. The lessons of life that were taught through this generous donation were priceless.
