Many of the books emphasize close reading, asking students to slow down and notice how authors develop characters, themes, and ideas. Others support vocabulary development through rich, authentic language and give students opportunities to practice making inferences, asking questions, and citing evidence from the text. Several of the books also encourage empathy and perspective-taking, helping students connect literature to their own lives and to the wider world.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active, social, and reflective. Students read independently, in small groups, and sometimes aloud together, depending on the goal of the lesson. We pause often to discuss what we're noticing, clarify confusion, and share interpretations. Students respond to their reading through discussion, writing, and creative projects, which helps them process ideas more deeply and build confidence as readers. Most importantly, reading time is treated as something meaningful and enjoyable, not just another assignment to complete.\r\n\r\nCertain students have been especially enthusiastic about the new books. Some who were previously reluctant readers are drawn in by relatable characters or topics that reflect their interests and experiences, and they are reading for longer stretches of time than before. Other students who already loved reading are excited to recommend books to classmates and lead thoughtful discussions. Overall, the new texts have helped foster a stronger reading community, where students feel excited to read, talk about books, and see themselves as capable, engaged readers.","fullyFundedDate":1758759583976,"projectUrl":"project/ms-p/9717040/","projectTitle":"Ms. P","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Pask","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10263262"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61197","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":889,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":17,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":69.2,"schoolId":61197,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Black Hawk Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Black Hawk Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/rosemount-apple-vly-eagan-196/black-hawk-middle-school/61197"}
