Receiving two microscopes and three sets of prepared slides has truly transformed our science block. When I first unveiled the materials, the students gasped and immediately leaned in closer; they could not wait to begin! They have been using the microscopes both in small collaborative groups and during whole-class demonstrations, taking turns carefully adjusting the focus and excitedly calling their classmates over to see what they discovered. Watching them encourage one another and share observations has been such a joyful moment as a teacher.\r\n\r\nThe traditional microscope has increased engagement in a powerful way as we study the biosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. Instead of simply reading about these systems, students are now analyzing and viewing them from a whole new lens (literally). From examining plant cells and tiny aquatic organisms to studying mineral samples, they are making real-world connections to the spheres we discuss in class. One memorable moment was when a group observed a water sample slide and began debating which sphere it connected to most strongly, using evidence from what they could actually see. Their conversations were thoughtful, animated, and entirely student-driven.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will be using the microscopes to conduct mini investigations tied to our current Earth systems unit. They will compare samples, record detailed scientific sketches, and write evidence-based explanations about how matter moves through the spheres. These tools have not only strengthened their scientific skills but have also built confidence and wonder. Your support has given my students the opportunity to experience science in an authentic, hands-on way, and the excitement in our classroom proves just how meaningful that gift has been.","fullyFundedDate":1763595439918,"projectUrl":"project/microscoping-to-understand-science/9499365/","projectTitle":"(Micro)Scoping to Understand Science","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10086553_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753064334092","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10086553"},{"teacherId":10086553,"projectId":9483451,"letterContent":"The excitement in our classroom was unforgettable—cheers of joy, proud smiles, and shining eyes filled the room as students received the donated books. In the days leading up to Winter Break, our class explored the new titles through daily book previews, sharing two to four books each day. Students eagerly listened to snippets, compared stories, and discovered which books they were most excited to read.\r\n\r\nMany students connected with stories centered on a love of animals, such as Jane Goodall, while others were thrilled to see people of color and immigrant experiences reflected in books like Simone Biles and Other Words for Home. Some could not wait to explore Spanish-English poetry, especially those learning Spanish at home while strengthening their English skills in the classroom. Others were immediately drawn to the interactive excitement of How to Escape a Video Game, captivated by its choose-your-own-adventure style.\r\n\r\nThank you for sharing the love of reading through stories our students can connect to and see themselves in.
