We encourage talking, we let you chill, and we're never going to judge what you're reading. We want students to feel empowered to seek out stories and information. However, we also want reading to invoke joy. Reading statistics have not declined as much as one might expect with the amount of time spend on cell phones and other devices, but we frequently hear from students who don't like reading or haven't finished a book since elementary school. Our hope is to encourage those readers to find something they enjoy.\r\nEvery year in February we celebrate \"I Love to Read\" month. We do different themes, we offer prizes, we encourage students to explore our library and check out new things. The best part about libraries is if you don't connect to a book, you can return it. While we have some readers who visit us daily year round, there is a definite uptick in students who check-out daily in February. They want tickets to try to win prizes. \r\nStudents spend several minutes trying to decide between the chicken nugget pillows or the shark blanket. Do they want to learn to play the Otamatone or the Kalimba? While we still have two weeks until we know the winners of the prizes, the impact of this project can already be seen with the excitement to check out books. In the coldest and snowiest month we've had so far this school year, the Reaching Non-Readers project has shown students some sunshine.","fullyFundedDate":1726341900198,"projectUrl":"project/reaching-non-readers/8745787/","projectTitle":"Reaching Non-Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Botnen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9734146"},{"teacherId":9702488,"projectId":8696159,"letterContent":"The boogie boards that I used the funds to purchase are super helpful in increasing student engagement with mathematics. They love to use them to do their math work on. They feel less concerned with making mistakes and more willing to try. With a push of the button it is like a mistake never even existed. In fact, my students love them so much that multiple students have told me that they requested and received for their own boards as a Christmas gift. \r\n\r\nI can not iterate loud enough how much the students LOVE the boards.
