Because of you, our classroom was transformed into Apple Valley School, inspired by the work of Janet Frey, where students embraced the daily routines, challenges, and joys of the 1850s.\r\n\r\nThroughout the simulation, students earned points to \"graduate\" to the next grade, wrote in pioneer diaries, created clothespin and paper dolls, and worked collaboratively in their \"families.\" These hands-on activities deepened their understanding of early American schooling and helped them appreciate the roots of our educational system. They became fully immersed in the literature and history of the time, carrying out the responsibilities and traditions of early pioneer children.\r\n\r\nThe books The Secret School by Avi, My Great-Aunt Arizona by Gloria Houston, and Twister on Tuesday from the Magic Tree House series enriched their experience even further, giving students powerful windows into the past and helping them imagine what life was truly like inside a one-room schoolhouse. These texts sparked meaningful discussions, inspired thoughtful writing, and brought history to life in ways that only good literature can.\r\n\r\nStudents look forward to Apple Valley School each year, and former students still fondly remember their pioneer names, families, and experiences. As both a classroom teacher and Reading Specialist, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing reading come alive for my students—and your generosity made that possible.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in this project, for supporting meaningful learning, and for helping create memories that my students will carry with them for years to come. The classroom has been buzzing with enthusiasm as students explore the process of designing and personalizing their own creations.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable projects was making custom mouse pads for Father's Day. Each student worked hard to create a unique design, proudly presenting their final product as a special gift.
