Mental Health has been a huge project/goal/center/purpose in my 21 years of teaching. When I first started teaching I didn't know I would also be a counselor to these kids as well and that they would look up to me as much as they have, ask for guidance, need a place to vent and someone to make them feel safe. I've grown to realize these are some of my important roles as a teacher and I thoroughly enjoy it.\r\n When we first started receiving the donation boxes they were quite confused because I teach Construction Trades and Welding. The students had no idea why we were getting coloring books, crayons, markers, colored pencils, pop-its and stress balls. After I explained to them what they were for they were less confused but still didn't totally get why. Once the first student came and asked if they could color, grab a pop-it or a stress ball it had a snow ball effect. Before school, during lunch, after school and even during class time students would ask if it was ok to use the supplies. If all their work was done absolutely they could. I even have students come get a pop-it or stress ball to use in other teachers classes during study time and to help them concentrate during individual work time. \r\n It has been amazing and heart warming watching high school kids the look like they might be tough decompress and smile while coloring. They all say thank you and let me know they'll be back to finish a page or start another one. This is one project that I will keep going for many years to come.
