Because of you, our entire school community—from kindergarten through fifth grade—was able to participate in a vibrant, meaningful celebration of culture and global connection. Your donated resources helped transform our school gym into a World Cup–style event, complete with a colorful balloon arch that students proudly walked through as they entered. The hallways became learning spaces as posters highlighting influential Hispanic figures were displayed, sparking curiosity and conversations among students, staff, and visitors. It was truly powerful to see the school come together in such an immersive and educational way.\r\nWhen students first experienced the setup and materials, their excitement was unforgettable. Walking under the balloon arch made them feel like they were part of something special and important. The soccer stress balls and stickers brought big smiles and added to the festive spirit, while also helping students connect the idea of the World Cup to global unity and teamwork. Each dual language class, from kindergarten to fifth grade, performed a song or dance from a different Spanish-speaking country, filling the gym with music, movement, and pride. Students in the traditional (non–dual language) program were the audience, learning about Hispanic Heritage Month through their peers' performances, and many parents, community members, and school district representatives joined us to celebrate. The event was even featured in our local news, highlighting the impact of this meaningful experience.\r\nThe next steps for our students build on the momentum of this unforgettable event. In classrooms across the school, students are reflecting on what they learned about Hispanic cultures, traditions, and contributions, and discussing how music, language, and celebration help connect people around the world. Teachers are continuing to integrate these cultural lessons into social studies, literacy, and the arts, reinforcing respect, inclusion, and global citizenship. Thanks to your support, our students not only celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month—they experienced it in a way that honored diversity, strengthened community ties, and created lasting memories. We are deeply grateful for your role in making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1758834614052,"projectUrl":"project/our-heritage-our-world-cup-kicking-for/9693180/","projectTitle":"Our Heritage, Our World Cup: Kicking for Unity","teacherDisplayName":"Sra. My fourth-grade students are using the plastic bins to responsibly collect and sort clean plastic bottles from their daily cafeteria breakfasts, and the crochet needles to begin turning everyday plastic bags into plarn. One special moment was when we set up a recycling corner in our classroom together—students proudly labeled the bins and explained their purpose to visiting classmates. Every Friday, students take responsibility for ensuring the collected bottles are delivered to a local plastic collection site, reinforcing real-world environmental stewardship and leadership.\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials you donated, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They were thrilled to hold the crochet needles and could not wait to begin learning how to crochet. Many asked if they could start right away, and their enthusiasm quickly turned into discipline and teamwork. Each day, students carefully save their breakfast plastic bags, reminding one another not to throw anything away. The two recycling books have also become favorites; students read them in small groups after completing their daily work, sparking thoughtful conversations about sustainability and global responsibility.\r\nOur next steps are just as exciting. Students have already begun making plarn from the collected plastic bags and are learning the basic crochet stitches with patience and pride. As the year continues, they will practice and refine their skills with the goal of creating a simple pencil pouch by the end of the year. This project is teaching far more than crafting—it is building problem-solving skills, environmental awareness, and the understanding that even small actions can make a global impact. Instead of just talking about coding, they get to try it out, make mistakes, fix them, and see the robot respond right away.\r\n\r\nThe thing students love most is watching Botley move around the grid based on the code they created. Whether they're solving a coding challenge or using the robots to answer Battle of the Books questions, they get so excited to test their ideas and see if their plan works.\r\n\r\nWe've had kids from kindergarten through fifth grade really connect with this new technology. Some of our quieter students, in particular, have surprised us by stepping up and taking the lead during the activities. They enjoy planning the robot's path and working with classmates to solve problems, and it's been great to see their confidence grow.\r\n\r\nThis project truly wouldn't have happened without Donors Choose.
