The headphones have been an absolute game changer in our classroom this year, and I have you to thank for that. \r\n\r\nWe have a supplies list that we send out before school starts, but in today's economic climate it can be a weight for many of our families. Adding things we desperately need, like headphones, can add to that weight. \r\n\r\nIn Kindergarten we do our best to keep screen time at a minimum, but technology is also imperative and kids love it. Right now my class uses their headphones almost daily. They use them to listen to books on CD, to explore educational apps on tablets, and to login to their computers and complete different tasks assigned to them by their tech teacher. \r\n\r\nThe bags are the perfect storage for kids to use them independently and efficiently. Truly— the time and money you have saved us cannot be put into words. Kindergarten children need lots of time and practice creating and expressing themselves before attempting to respond to actual academic prompts and written work. Young children need to develop fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, strength and stamina because writing is a complicated skill. During our free choice period over half the class choose the special glitter, gel and scented pens to create. Many children made detailed plans earlier in the day such as 'meet me at the art table and we can finish our cartoon book!' They also helped and encouraged each other throughout. With your funding, I have been able to purchase 5 copies of multiple book titles. Having multiple copies of the same book allows me to read a high-quality texts during small group reading time. In this setting a group of 5 students works at my reading table. We engage in book talks and discussions. The children are very engaged in the text, when they have their own book to read closely and enjoy the illustrations. \r\n\r\nThe titles of the texts that I purchased using your funding all have a similar themes. The theme of these texts is, Overcoming Learning Challenges. Some of the books talk about modern day challenges, children around the work have while accessing books. For example, one text is called, Waiting for the Bibliburro. In this text, a little girl in Columbia does not have a school or a library, BUT once a month the library man comes to her remote village with his two donkeys carrying new library books. The little girl loves to read and learn and the Biblioburros/donkeys who bring books allow her to learn and grow. At any given time, my kindergarten, first, and second graders are lounging around the library with the new colorful cushions--they are such a hot commodity that I am always reminding my students to use their walking feet--they get too excited and want to run for the cushions! It's such a joy to see them reading together all around the library. \r\n\r\nI have also loved introducing my students to Story Cubes! The first time I put them out as a station gravitated to them.
