I teach in a primary school (K-2) and work with about 30 special education students. Many of the resources that your donation covered for my classroom are teacher supplies that I use to create materials for my students. I use the laminating pouches weekly to make reusable materials for my students and other students in the building. \r\nThe students were so excited when the boxes began appearing in the classroom. The most impactful items to the students were the games and building toys. I use these items in many ways. Many of my students work for rewards during the day or the week. They love choosing a game to play with me or other students as part of their reward. I also use the games with students who are working on their social emotional growth. The games allow a fun way to make friends or learn how to have a reciprocal conversation. \r\nI have set up a pencil sharpening station in my class and plan to have students pick up pencils from classrooms in our building. They will sharpen the pencils and return them to the classrooms. \r\nThese supplies have made my job easier and more fun. The students and I really appreciate everything that was donated.","fullyFundedDate":1727462644711,"projectUrl":"project/supplies-and-rewards/8577097/","projectTitle":"Supplies and Rewards","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gayle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9633225"},{"teacherId":9633224,"projectId":8577035,"letterContent":"I hope this letter finds you well and thriving. I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your generous contributions that provided our classroom with calm-down tools, visual timers, and flexible floor seating. Your support has made a remarkable difference in the lives of our special needs students, and I am thrilled to share how these items have positively impacted them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we serve a diverse group of students with varying needs, many of whom require additional support to regulate their emotions, manage their time, and remain engaged during lessons. The resources you provided have addressed these areas in ways that have exceeded our expectations.\r\n\r\nThe calm-down tools have become an essential part of our daily routine. Many of our students struggle with sensory processing challenges, which can lead to heightened anxiety or difficulty focusing. With items such as sensory fidgets, weighted lap pads, and stress balls, our students now have a tangible way to self-regulate their emotions. For instance, one student who previously experienced frequent meltdowns during transitions has found comfort in using a textured fidget cube. This simple tool has given them an outlet for their nervous energy, allowing them to approach new activities with greater ease and confidence.\r\n\r\nAnother success story involves a student with autism who often needed extended breaks to calm down after overwhelming situations. With the introduction of the calm-down kit, this student has learned to identify their emotions and use specific tools, such as the breathing board or squeeze ball, to self-soothe. As a result, their ability to return to learning more quickly has improved significantly, fostering both academic progress and personal growth.\r\n\r\nThe visual timers have been a game-changer in promoting time management and reducing anxiety around transitions. Many of our students find abstract concepts like time difficult to grasp, leading to frustration or resistance when asked to switch tasks. The visual timers provide a concrete representation of time that students can see and understand. This has been especially beneficial for students with ADHD, who often struggle with sustaining attention and transitioning smoothly.\r\n\r\nFor example, during independent work periods, the timers help students stay on task by breaking down activities into manageable intervals. One student, who previously required constant reminders to stay focused, now uses the timer independently to track their progress. This small but significant shift has increased their sense of autonomy and reduced the need for adult intervention.\r\n\r\nThe timers have also proven invaluable during calming exercises and breaks. By setting a timer, students know exactly how long they have to relax before returning to the group. This predictability has alleviated much of the stress surrounding transitions, creating a smoother and more harmonious classroom environment.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe addition of flexible floor seating has transformed the physical and emotional dynamics of our classroom. Many of our students have difficulty sitting still in traditional chairs for extended periods. The flexible seating options, including wobble cushions, bean bags, and floor chairs, have provided them with alternatives that cater to their individual needs.\r\n\r\nStudents now have the freedom to choose seating that helps them feel most comfortable and focused. One student with sensory processing challenges prefers a bean bag during reading time, which allows them to feel grounded and secure. Another student with ADHD has thrived using a wobble cushion, which enables subtle movement while maintaining engagement in lessons.\r\n\r\nThe impact of this change goes beyond physical comfort. Flexible seating has also fostered a greater sense of inclusion and community. Students feel empowered to make choices about their learning environment, which has boosted their confidence and motivation. Group activities have become more collaborative, as students are more willing to participate when they feel comfortable and supported.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our classroom has become a more supportive and inclusive space where all students can thrive. The calm-down tools, visual timers, and flexible floor seating have addressed critical areas of need, enabling our students to develop self-regulation skills, manage their time effectively, and engage more fully in their learning. These changes have not only enhanced their academic performance but also their overall well-being and sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nYour kindness and commitment to supporting special needs students have made a lasting impact. On behalf of our entire classroom community, thank you for believing in our students and investing in their potential. We are deeply grateful for your support and look forward to sharing more success stories as our students continue to grow and flourish.","fullyFundedDate":1727462603856,"projectUrl":"project/to-help-students-regulate-and-learn/8577035/","projectTitle":"To help students regulate and learn","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kirsten","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9633224"},{"teacherId":9111185,"projectId":8568300,"letterContent":"My students were so happy to see the Big Joe beanbag chairs. The chairs added the final touch to our Social Emotional Learning Library in my School Counseling room. We also use them for small counseling groups that target empathy, focus, and social skills. \r\n\r\nThis school year I wanted to integrate more book sharing and literature into my school counseling program. That meant building a calm and comfortable reading area in my room. \r\n\r\nIn an earlier project, a generous donor gave us a collection of the Little Spot books by Diane Alber that teach children about emotions and regulation skills. The SEL Library also contains books that relate to social-emotional development by authors such as Gabi Garcia, Susan Verde, and Peter Reynolds. Now our students are able to enjoy a soft comfortable place to share and read these books together. \r\n\r\nThis project has impacted all 240 students in our K-2 Primary School.
