On Friday, they became mentors; teaching their first grade reading buddies how to nature journal! With their tools in hand and giant smiles, my fourth graders guided their first grade buddy to our outdoor learning space. There was so much to see and do. Some students sat with a tray of biofacts and used the digital microscopes to get a close-up look at the fine details on pinecones, shells and flowers. Other students went looking for bugs while other sat next to a pretty plant! My students taught the first graders to include not only drawings in their nature journal, but to include metadata. First graders loved getting help writing important data like location, the weather and date.\r\n\r\nMy fourth grade scholars were so excited! They said it was fun, but hard work keeping their eye on a first grader! The first graders were excited to receive a nature journal to keep. Growing a love for nature and literacy is essential! I'm thrilled my students were able to help a younger group of students become better at reading, writing, speaking and observing the nature world. Our world is beautiful! \r\n\r\n\r\nThe books are lovely and we will continue to read to our first grade reading buddies on Friday afternoons building literacy skills for both my fourth graders and our first grade reading buddies!\r\n\r\nThis project is a winning combination! We use the \"hear myself\" phones daily during our articulation practice, allowing students to clearly hear the sounds they are producing and begin to self-monitor in a way that was not previously accessible to them. The magnetic phonics tiles have also become an essential tool during therapy sessions, helping students connect speech sounds to letters as they build simple words. One particularly meaningful moment was when a student, who had been struggling to produce a target sound, used the sound phone and independently corrected themselves—an exciting step toward self-awareness and confidence in their speech.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials were first introduced, the students were immediately engaged and curious. The sound phones felt especially empowering, as students loved hearing their own voices amplified and began experimenting more with sound production. The sensory sand has been a wonderful addition as well, providing a tactile and low-pressure way for students to practice forming letters while simultaneously saying and reinforcing their target sounds. This multi-sensory approach has been key in keeping young learners motivated while strengthening both their speech production and early literacy skills.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are building on this progress by integrating these tools into more structured speech and language activities. Students are beginning to generalize their target sounds beyond isolated practice—using the magnetic tiles to build and say simple words, and even short phrases, with increasing accuracy. We will continue using the sensory sand to support sound-symbol correspondence and early writing, while encouraging students to take greater ownership of monitoring their own speech using the sound phones. Your support has truly enhanced the quality of intervention I can provide, helping my students develop the foundational communication skills they need for future success.","fullyFundedDate":1768757149685,"projectUrl":"project/preschool-foundational-language-litera/10037109/","projectTitle":"Preschool Foundational Language & Literacy Supports","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Drexler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10279301"},{"teacherId":7119590,"projectId":10159780,"letterContent":"Colorful pages, black print and a hardcover.
