The students have started reading the first book, The Boy on the Wooden Box, which is about one of the youngest people added to Oskar Schindler's list and was saved from being sent to a concentration camp. Before we started reading the novel, we did a week long lesson on the Holocaust. Only a few of my 6th graders had any prior knowledge of what that word even means or had even heard of it. I was a large task to undertake, but I was more than willing to introduce them to this moment in history and how important it is to remember history and not forget those that were affected by the Holocaust. My students were eager to learn all they could, asked thoughtful questions, and couldn't believe something like the Holocaust was allowed to happened. \r\n\r\nWe are reading the novel aloud together in class and making connections to the timeline we created of the Holocaust. We will be adding events from the novel to the timeline as we go. Our essential question for the novel is memory and remembering people from the past. We are also looking at how peoples' identities and understanding of the world around them affect they way they respond in a moment of crisis. My students will complete small projects on survivors' stories and learn more about the people in the novel. \r\n\r\nMy heart is truly full. I'm so grateful for the novels purchased with your help, and incredibly proud of my students for engaging with our Holocaust studies with such compassion and open-hearted curiosity.","fullyFundedDate":1741991588607,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-the-holocaust-novels-to-inspi/9004420/","projectTitle":"\"Teaching the Holocaust: Novels to Inspire Reflection and Understanding\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Holmes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9872945_orig.jpg?crop=1024,1024,x1024,y109&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734487126746","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9872945"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2268","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":514,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":79,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":77.8,"schoolId":2268,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bath Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bath Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/beaufort-county-school-district/bath-elementary-school/2268"}
