My students couldn't wait to dive in and immediately began exploring all the possibilities. One small group used the Playstix to design a bridge that could hold toy cars, while another worked together to create a dinosaur habitat using the Dino set. I was so impressed watching them brainstorm, test, and redesign their ideas. It was hands-on learning at its best.\r\n\r\nThe very first day, the room filled with gasps and shouts of \"Wow!\" and \"Can I try that?\" as the students saw the bright new materials. Many of them rushed to touch and explore, and it was clear they felt like they had brand-new tools for discovery and play. Their curiosity sparked collaboration right away, even students who are usually quiet were eager to join in and share ideas.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these materials will be central to our STEM challenges and centers. Next, we'll be exploring \"structures in nature,\" where students will use the building materials to model strong shapes and practice problem-solving in teams. My students have been using the new kits during STEM lessons to explore how electricity works in real-life situations. \r\n\r\nWhen the kits first arrived, the students' eyes lit up. Many couldn't believe that they were going to get to build with real circuits and switches. They were eager to open the boxes right away, and the excitement in the classroom turned into focused curiosity as they began snapping pieces together and testing what worked (and what didn't). There favorite part has been seeing how many different ways they can build a circuit.\r\n\r\nAs a next step, students are planning their own mini \"home designs\" using the Snap Circuits. First, they sketch out their plan on a planning sheet, deciding which circuits they'd like to include, such as lights, fans, or alarms. Then, they bring their ideas to life by building and testing their designs. This process helps them see how important planning is, while also giving them the freedom to be creative problem-solvers.\r\n\r\nThank you again for bringing these hands-on learning opportunities to my classroom. We started using them right away during STEM time. One of our favorite moments was when a group of students worked together to build a tall tower using all three materials. They quickly learned that it wasn't just about stacking pieces, it was about problem-solving, adjusting their design, and cooperating with their teammates.\r\n\r\nThe students' reactions the first time they saw the materials were priceless. They were amazed by how the magnets snapped together and how the Playstix could lock into different shapes. Many of them immediately began experimenting to see how high or wide they could build. The excitement in the room was contagious, and their joy turned into determination to keep trying new designs.\r\n\r\nAs our next step, students are learning how to plan their builds before starting. Each student uses a planning sheet to sketch their idea, then they bring their design to life using the building materials. Sometimes their projects match the plan exactly, and other times the design changes as they build, which sparks great conversations about creativity and problem-solving. This process helps them develop not only STEM skills but also persistence and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1754790952402,"projectUrl":"project/stem-building-materials-for-k-3/9482780/","projectTitle":"STEM Building Materials for K-3","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Reeser","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7155941_orig.jpg?crop=575,576,x0,y46&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1583361350483","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7155941"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25123","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":430,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":15,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":49,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":87.5,"schoolId":25123,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bartlett Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bartlett Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/elgin-school-district-u-46/bartlett-elementary-school/25123"}
