Because of your support, we were able to bring the kind of hands-on scientific experience that has long been reserved for well-resourced university labs into our classroom, and the results have been transformative.\r\n\r\nThe moment students first saw the materials, the energy in the room shifted. When we unboxed the Heart and Brain SpikerBox kits, students were able to record their own live Brain and muscle signals for the first time, listening to their hearts, muscles, and brains in real time. During the heart and sheep brain dissections, one student quietly said, \"I didn't know we could actually do this.\" That reaction captures everything. These are students who have been told, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, that cutting-edge science isn't for them. Your donation said otherwise. We've since used the Carolina Reflexes kit to measure neural reflexes, DNA Barcoding kits to identify species from environmental samples, and the Protein Assay stations to run experiments they had only ever read about in textbooks.\r\n\r\nCurrently, our students are working through a multi-week investigation into human genetics and evolution, using the Mitochondrial DNA Polymorphisms kit to trace population migrations and explore their own ancestral connections to the science. All the modules we are learning will culminate in two Health Fairs, where our students will have the opportunity to teach the larger student body what they have learned during this period. The goal is for each student to leave this course not just having seen science, but having done it at a level that prepares them for college labs, and to teach the same content as a way to encourage deeper learning and communication skills. Thanks to you, that is no longer just a dream; it is happening right now.","fullyFundedDate":1766621195048,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-underrepresented-students-thr/9748846/","projectTitle":"Empowering Underrepresented Students through Cutting-Edge Biology Learning Tools.","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Ndukwe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10274945_orig.jpg?crop=200,200,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758574284165","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10274945"},{"teacherId":4875990,"projectId":10182262,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting this project and helping us create a library that works for all kinds of readers. The reading supports have become part of students' everyday routines in ways I didn't expect.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching students walk over to the reading support station before they even choose a book. They flip through the colored overlays to see which one feels most comfortable. Others grab a highlighter strip without being reminded.\r\n\r\nThe Playaway has also made a real difference. Students appreciate being able to listen to a book without needing a phone or logging into another platform. For some, it has made assigned reading feel much more manageable. I've had students tell me they understood chapters they had struggled with simply because they could hear the text read aloud.\r\n\r\nWhat I appreciate most is that these tools have become a normal part of the library. Students borrow them the same way they borrow books, and there is no hesitation or embarrassment. They are discovering that there isn't just one right way to read. A group of 30 students who study Spanish and music in our title one school gathered in the historic auditorium of our building to listen to, sing, and dance the hybrid rhythms of cumbia from Colombia. Students watched as musicians introduced themselves, and then students joined in the dance and performance taking the instruments into their own hands to play, and holding hands with one another as they danced. Students who were timid and shy at first became active participants by the end of the period, flashing big smiles and coming away having learned about this great music.\r\n\r\nOur Spanish courses focus on the meeting of cultures, and this was the perfect compliment to our classroom discussions, bringing together our class in a way that can hardly be matched without it. The titles we shared were high-interest books that students had asked for, which made a big difference.
