Once it arrived, management approved the purchase of a special bench and pedals for it. Also, another Donorschoose grant provided excellent ANC headphones so students can play quietly while a class is being held in the room. Being an audiophile, the complete system pleases me and stuns everyone.\r\n\r\nDuring each class period, at least one student presses a few keys. Others watch. Most are hesitant, but when asked, they claim they are thinking about it with a smile. Two groups are pressing for friends to get to it. We have several dancers who would like human accompaniment, not just recordings to dance to. The tech team wants to get MIDI working for compositions that unite the piano and electronic drums. \r\n\r\nOur music overlay department, like our CTE overlay department, is just starting this year. The piano allows both to work with different students and teachers. With the new books you helped provide, my 11th and 12th grade students have been more eager than ever to read. Several students who once stuck to Diary of a Wimpy Kid have now confidently picked up more challenging novels like We Were Here by Matt de la Peña, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds—and they're telling me how much they're enjoying them!\r\n\r\nEvery day, my students read in class and then share what they've discovered in their books. It's inspiring to see their comprehension deepen and their excitement grow with each discussion. We also build our vocabulary together by identifying and studying unknown words from our readings, which has turned into one of their favorite parts of class. Thanks to your kindness, my students are not only reading more—they're understanding, connecting, and truly loving the process.","fullyFundedDate":1760658879207,"projectUrl":"project/igniting-reading-skills-with-engaging-bo/9661148/","projectTitle":"Igniting Reading Skills with Engaging Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1020365_orig.jpg?crop=170,170,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756405535332","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1020365"},{"teacherId":9994132,"projectId":9247544,"letterContent":"The Safe Space Healing Items project has given students a place to calm, reflect, and feel supported. What used to be quiet and muffled is now full of energy and life. When we watch science videos or listen to health lessons, the sound is clear, rich, and easy to follow. You can actually feel the room leaning in. Students who used to zone out during presentations now sit up, listen, and join the conversation.\r\nFor a lot of my students, school can feel like just another thing they have to get through. But when class feels alive — when they can hear, see, and experience what we're learning — everything changes. The addition of a 3D printer has already sparked incredible curiosity and engagement among my students. On the very first day of it's arrival, they began asking how it works, what it costs to purchase and operate, and even explored a mock business model by calculating the cost and profit of printing small fidgets for resale. They were amazed at the difference between production costs and retail prices—moments like these open their eyes to real-world opportunities in business, engineering, and design.\r\n\r\nWe've already started using the printer to bring our physics lessons to life. For example, I've been designing and printing parts to demonstrate how our communities are powered through renewable energy, like wind turbines. These models are helping students visualize electric generators in action, connecting magnetism and electricity in a hands-on way. Their questions and ideas are now emerging earlier and with more depth because of the tools we can create together.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I plan to use this printer to nurture creativity and problem-solving skills through 3D design challenges, giving students the opportunity to engineer and prototype their own ideas. The possibilities are truly endless—and it's all thanks to your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1755738698815,"projectUrl":"project/3d-printer-to-engage-student-learning/9586565/","projectTitle":"3D Printer to Engage Student Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Richelieu","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10174570_orig.jpg?crop=1438,1438,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755631137778","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10174570"},{"teacherId":116756,"projectId":9103132,"letterContent":"Of the many grants I've written over the past two decades, \"Standing Math\" may have the most impact because administrators around the district have observed students in action, and consultants are now training additional teachers in its use. I was the first teacher in my district to have a 360-degree room of whiteboards.\r\n\r\nThe \"Vertical, Erasable Surface\" approach is at least a decade old. I tried it but stumbled in 2018. Earlier, one school in LA Unified successfully pioneered it with a 2,000-page curriculum(!) until LA Unified killed the experiment for incompatibility with other schools - truly, a multi-billion dollar waste of human capital.\r\n\r\nFirst, students work and talk about math while doing math. \r\nSecond, some teachers have extended Standing Math through Calculus.\r\nThird, other teachers believe this isn't real math.\r\n\r\nAll three matter because the teaching goal is 100% connection with people, and no one method can do that, even if it's the best! A math teacher team delivers \"solution sets\" of \"instructional practices\" to reach every student. If most teachers use Standing Math and the remainder give a more traditional approach, with both groups employing one or two \"adaptive math software programs,\" close to a 100% connection can be made with all SES levels.","fullyFundedDate":1739552932406,"projectUrl":"project/stand-tall-be-seen-doing-math/9103132/","projectTitle":"Stand Tall & Be Seen Doing Math","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. A","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp116756_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1454300061582","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ashendorf"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_92232","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":150,"numTeachers":13,"percentFrplEligible":88,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":74,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":78.8,"schoolId":92232,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Back Bay High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Back Bay High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/newport-mesa-unified-school-district/back-bay-high-school-alternative-education-ctr/92232"}
