Some of these students are reading well below grade level expectations and have never been able to pick up a book that \"looked\" like the books their peers were reading. Some of these students have never read a chapter book. Some of these students are on the verge of giving up because the only books available to them are \"baby\" books.\r\n But now a bin sits on the shelves of my office. A bin filled with high interest, low readability books that these students CAN read. Books that have chapters and are filled with decodable words that even students who are several years behind their peers can read. Books that are on topics of interest to students in upper elementary grades. Books that they can read in front of peers without embarrassment. \r\n My students are finding joy in reading again. They are borrowing books from this bin and begging for more time to read them. They are bringing them home to read to their parents. They have set goals to read all the books in a given series. These students are finding success and becoming better readers. They are talking about books and making connections. It is truly remarkable to see the impact that these books have had. The books are making a difference and I will be eternally grateful for them, and you for making all of this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1733257604546,"projectUrl":"project/decodable-books-for-older-students/8810085/","projectTitle":"Decodable Books for Older Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hoyt","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9771330"},{"teacherId":9797516,"projectId":8865369,"letterContent":"I am incredibly grateful to have a brand-new rug in my classroom for all my students to enjoy. The look on their faces when they first saw it was absolutely priceless. Many asked with excitement, \"Where did this rug come from?\" or \"Did you get a rug?\" while others simply exclaimed, \"You got a rug!\" I was quick to clarify: this wasn't my rug—it was their rug.\r\n\r\nSince its arrival, the rug has become so much more than just a decorative addition. It's a space where students play games, learn, dance, read, stretch, and participate in mindfulness activities like belly breathing. Some even use it as a quiet, calming location to reset and regulate their bodies. Beyond its practicality, the rug fills our small classroom with vibrant, welcoming colors, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for everyone.\r\n\r\nOur classroom goal for 2025 is to embrace floor-based learning as much as possible! This approach has already boosted engagement levels for students of all ages. We are deeply grateful for your generous gesture in donating this rug to our classroom. Your kindness has made a lasting impact, and we wish you all the best as you continue to bring joy and positivity to others.","fullyFundedDate":1730426119802,"projectUrl":"project/the-kids-have-spoken-we-want-a-rug/8865369/","projectTitle":"The Kids Have Spoken - “We Want a Rug!”","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gail","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9797516_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728525788064","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9797516"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61985","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":321,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":93.8,"schoolId":61985,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Avery Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Avery Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/dedham-public-schools/avery-elementary-school/61985"}
