Because of you, my 5th grade gifted students were able to engage with rich, culturally diverse texts that opened their eyes in ways our traditional curriculum simply did not. Reading in our classroom is always lively, thought-provoking, and fun but these new books created a powerful shift. Students were not only excited to read; they became deeply reflective about their own educational experiences and the privileges they often take for granted.\r\n\r\nAs they explored characters from different countries and examined how traditions, responsibilities, and access to schooling vary around the world, my students began making meaningful connections. Through close reading, character analysis, and discussions about theme and culture, they recognized how fortunate they are to have the freedoms, consistency, and resources that define American education. Many expressed surprise at how different school looks for children in other countries. This realization sparked genuine gratitude and a stronger appreciation for their teachers, their school community, and the opportunities available to them daily.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the entire class loved the reading experience. They were energized by the characters, curious about global traditions, and proud to reflect on their own educational journey with a new sense of thankfulness. Your generosity did far more than place a book in their hands it helped them see their world differently, value their education more deeply, and understand the importance of using their opportunities wisely. Words can not express the amazing impact that you all have had on me and our wonderful students. As the STEM teacher at Austin Road Elementary, I was given the privilege to teach science, technology, engineering and math to Pre-K through 5th grade scholars. The curriculum required a different lesson plan to be taught for each grade covering a multitude of STEM topics. Our student body contained 400+ students that spanned across 18 classes in STEM every week. We covered various lessons from weather, sink or swim, day and night, environmental changes, planets and constellations, engineering, magnetism, animals, construction, LEGO builds, climates, critical thinking and a host of other topics regarding the wonderful world of STEM. \r\n\r\nAs a teacher at a Title I school, I took my responsibility to encourage the love of learning as a personal endeavor. We often have various issues that can impact the learning environment in a negative way. At the beginning of the year, I inducted the student's as \"Ms. Lee's Lightbulbs\" as a way to encourage them to \"shine their light\" and \"staying lit\" by showing respect, kindness, courtesy, and overall a passion for learning and participating. \r\n\r\nThe students were rewarded throughout the year with \"Lit Tix\" (tickets) of various shiny colors to be redeemed at the end of the year at our \"LIT STORE\". I took suggestions for the types of gadgets and toys that they wanted in the store that reflected the lessons we had learned over the year (plus sweet treats of course)! Their newfound love of learning grew over the year as I watched them all shoot their hands up to answer questions, be respectful to their classmates, and empower others when their light was shining brightly.\r\n\r\nThe promise of a \"LIT STORE\" not only motivated the students to use their minds and manners, but I was able to fulfill the promise of recognizing such stellar behavior with a stellar reward. The students were so excited! They could not believe all of the options they had to choose from, including slime, Rubik's cubes, animals, school supplies, cars, fidget spinners and so much more that they did not even request! Each student was given a bag and able to pick the items that equaled the Lit Tix they had accumulated over the year. Many students were given additional items and bonus tickets to use because we had such an overflow of items! Every smile was worth it!\r\n\r\nThis feat wouldn't have been possible without the help of people like you who recognize how positive reinforcement can make the world a brighter place, especially for our children... The children are the future!
