Coming back from summer vacation, where kids didn't have to sit at a desk at all, these young people were really feeling the ache. You could see students squirm and wiggle—THEN your gift arrived! We got a couple of standing desks, a height-adjustable work station and a few spinning stools. \r\nWe have 35 students in each class, so it certainly isn't enough for everyone, but it REALLY helps. These standing desks and spinning stools have made SUCH a difference for certain students. The laptop, headphones, and microphone were just what we needed to generate student interest in (sometimes scary!) public speaking projects. \r\nI have a number of 8th graders working on \"legacy projects\" using this equipment right now! They are passing on their expertise to next year's incoming 7th graders via video. \r\nThey're each chosen a topic—grades, school clubs, sports, leadership events—and they're using photos they took of our school throughout the year on that topic to create the video element. Then, they're using the recording equipment to narrate information they wish they'd known when they first got to AJHS. Your gift is making a difference in the lives of these young people—making them feel like experts with important knowledge to share. It will also help the incoming 7th graders to get the inside scoop during an important and sometimes overwhelming transition.","fullyFundedDate":1718641391967,"projectUrl":"project/help-us-make-the-world-a-better-place/8440823/","projectTitle":"Help Us Make the World a Better Place!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. EL","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6643227_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565645839858","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/accelerated"},{"teacherId":6643227,"projectId":8792850,"letterContent":"Your generosity knows no bounds! First semester was a whirlwind of learning in Room 21. \r\n\r\nThe seventh graders read A Long Walk to Water and learned about Salva Dut's journey and life in Southern Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War. We also found out that Salva Dut is an actual person who now builds wells for the people of Sudan. If you'd like to donate to an excellent cause, WaterforSudan.com is the site to check out.\r\n\r\nSeventh graders also read the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. In addition to learning some British slang (read: antiquated curse words), students worked on their argument writing skills.\r\n\r\nEighth graders read Inside Out & Back Again and studied the refugee experience during first quarter. They also read The Outsiders and created their own book clubs within the class to talk about the books they decide to read as a team. It's reading, it's fun, and it involves snacks--can we really get any better?\r\n\r\nEighth graders are now reading A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. Students are tracking the theme of control in the book--analyzing whether characters can successfully control one another. Watching them \"unlock the code\" of Shakespeare is a special treat for me. It's amazing to hear them laugh at the jokes in the play.\r\n\r\nOur Advisory classes are learning about being kind to others and to ourselves. We're doing regular grade checks, organization checks, and planner checks. We spend a few minutes getting grounded in the morning and ready to take on the day. It's sweet.\r\n\r\nAll of this learning is possible thanks to your generous donations. We have more than 140 students who call Room 21 home each day, and all of them have received your school supplies. Whether it is a binder, a pencil pouch, sticky notes, Post-It Flags, a pencil, an eraser, or a Jolly Rancher, your gift has impacted every single student in this room. It's also impacted me personally--I'm deeply grateful for your generosity.\r\n\r\nWe have another project on this site.
