Yet again, you've enriched the lives of so many students at Aptos Junior High. \r\n\r\nYou've purchased copies of the book \"The Omnivore's Dilemma\" by Michael Pollan. Not only is it a deep dive into the US food system, it's a terrific nonfiction read that helps us to understand where our food comes from. \r\n\r\nWe get to apply that knowledge in our own school cafeteria. We have an amazing food services team here, led by Ma Cici, and we got to see the kinds of food they use to make meals for us. Did you know that much of the fresh fruits and vegetables we eat are locally grown. Ms. Cici's farm even grows some of our kiwi fruit!\r\n\r\nThis book is helping students to think about food in an entirely new way. What an impact you've had! Students are thriving, completing projects and assignments, staying organized, using their annotation tools to mark up text in meaningful ways. It's really impressive, to be honest, and we have so much gratitude in our hearts for you.\r\n\r\nUsually, teachers have some money for supplies given to them by the district--it doesn't go very far, but it's something. This year, we weren't given any money towards school supplies, so purchasing materials for all 189 children in my classes each day would have fallen to me alone. I can't thank you enough for coming alongside me to support these amazing scholars.\r\n\r\nWe are using our binders, folders, pencil pouches filled with pencils, highlighters, erasers, and Post-Its every single day. The struggles she faces—from leaving nearly everything to bullies in her new country—are ones that are moving for students. \r\n\r\nThe novel is also unique in that it is truly a novel—the deep structure of the text is time, but it is also exclusively comprised of poems that our protagonist, Hà, writes. This allows us to lean about story arcs and poetry at the same time. A bonus!\r\n\r\nThe added benefit of being able to annotate in these books intensifies this learning. Students use the letter \"C\" in the margins to make connections between their lives and Hà's life. They circle new vocabulary like Tét and glutinous. They put a smiley face next to parts that make them smile. \r\n\r\nYOU make us smile, and enhance our learning so much, with your kindness and generosity.
