I have been working with these kids for 10 school years and the need for some basic items is so great in this population.\r\n\r\nMy students come from mostly lower socioeconomic families. I am so happy that my Health Office can provide the supplies needed.\r\n\r\nWinter weather in our state can be tough on my kiddos. Painful, dry and cracked lips are very common. Knowing that I can help relieve some pain with something as small as a chapstick is what makes my job worth it, day after day!\r\n\r\nMealtime can also be a challenge for some of the families. Having some extra and/or healthy snack options in the Health Office settle a lot of tummies that ache because they could not eat at home that morning.\r\n\r\nWithout your generosity, I would not be able to help my kids! The children sort them into a variety of categories, that sometimes need an explanation as to why they have sorted certain ones together, but makes sense after being explained. The bugs are stored in a very heavy wooden lazy susan style tray. It takes team work to get them from the bookcase to the table, the children like the challenge of heavy lifting. They take the bugs out sort them into different categories and then get to spin the tray round and round. When the children are using the bugs they have very interesting conversations. Since they are four, there may be as many topics being discussed as there are children, and on other days the conversation can be very focused on a single quality that each insect has like color or number of wings.\r\n\r\nThank you for your support of public schools and for helping to provide materials to my students that I would not be able to give to them by myself.","fullyFundedDate":1765968130564,"projectUrl":"project/are-all-insects-bugs/9894245/","projectTitle":"Are All Insects Bugs?","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morrell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3919708_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1708992263376","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/n-morrell"},{"teacherId":3919708,"projectId":9934514,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting my Creating Slime, Gloop, Kinetic Sand, Color Mixing and Suncatcher Creations project. The children were very excited when the supplies arrived. Thus far we have done a variety of color mixing activities using the food coloring, water, oil, and the test tubes. We have also used silicone ice cube trays and pipettes to do color mixing activities. The children become completely engrossed in the process and are very good at not mixing colors in our three primary color containers. They are amazed every time the colors mix and change. They can do this activity for about 30 minutes with an intense interest in the process. They now ask for this as an activity to do during their free play time.\r\n\r\nWe have also made Gloop out of water and cornstarch. They were fascinated by how it starts out as a solid and then quickly drips into a liquid in their hands. They bury their hands in the Gloop and then squeal when they pulled out their hands and it turns into a drippy liquid.\r\n\r\nThe colored sand is beautiful, the colors are rich and vibrant. We will make this into kinetic sand in the future. Right now we use it on trays to practice writing our numbers and letters. The children also enjoy creating patterns and designs with their fingers. The classroom becomes quiet with their concentration during this activity.\r\n\r\nThe suncatchers are a work in process. While the colors were mixing, they were beautiful to watch the colors combine on the light table. After they dried, they were not quite as impressive, but it is a learning process for all of us. We use the carpet every day as a central gathering space for whole-group instruction, read-alouds, songs, and learning activities. One of my favorite moments was during our literacy block, when students sat together on the carpet practicing letter sounds and vocabulary—having a comfortable, defined space helped them stay focused, engaged, and excited to participate.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new carpet, their faces lit up with excitement. They immediately wanted to sit on it, touch it, and find their own special spot. For many of my students, especially my kindergarteners, having a safe and comfortable place to learn together helps them feel calm, supported, and ready to learn. The carpet has also helped us build a stronger sense of classroom community, as students practice sitting together, taking turns, and listening respectfully.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, the carpet will continue to play an important role in our daily learning. We will use it for small-group discussions, language development activities, and interactive lessons that support early reading, math, and social skills. The materials arrived and they are even better than I expected. Both the scooters and balance bikes are sturdy and well made. I had the children help me put together the first scooter, then I called over individual students to help with each part of the second scooter. When it was time to put together the third scooter one boy came over and put it together by himself, he only need help holding the 2nd allen wrench to tighten the screws. At one point he just had to attach the seat but it was behind him and he could not see it, so he took the instructions and carefully looked them over to see what he was missing. When he was done he promptly asked me when we were going to put the bikes together!\r\n\r\nI had originally thought we would use these materials outside but they have been a welcome addition for when we have indoor recess. I put pool noodle bumpers on the front of the scooters so they don't chip the paint in the hallway and the children are able to bike and scooter the length of the hall. The helmets fit perfectly. We also now have a schedule for when the gym is available for them to have a larger space. The children have become the envy of the older children who see them in the hallway. My principal was so impressed by them, as was the gym teacher, that we have ordered three more scooters so more children can use them at the same time both in class and in gym class. We will also be loaning them to the gym teacher so they can be used by more classes.\r\n\r\nThe comet balls have been a huge hit in our outside play, they arrived at the same time as the snow.
