Many of my clients, especially children and adolescents, experience difficulty opening up through traditional talk-based approaches alone. Incorporating the Nintendo Switch into sessions has helped lower anxiety, reduce resistance, and create a more relaxed and safe environment. Through cooperative and problem-solving games, clients are more willing to participate, communicate, and express themselves in ways that feel natural and non-threatening.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the Nintendo Switch has supported the development of important therapeutic skills such as frustration tolerance, impulse control, emotional awareness, and social interaction. Games provide real-time opportunities to observe coping strategies, reactions to setbacks, and communication styles, which allows for meaningful therapeutic discussions and skill-building in the moment. Clients are able to practice emotional regulation, turn-taking, and teamwork while receiving immediate support and guidance, making these lessons more impactful and easier to generalize to real-life situations.\r\n\r\nOverall, the Nintendo Switch has enhanced the effectiveness of my counseling sessions by increasing engagement, strengthening rapport, and providing an interactive medium for therapeutic growth. Its use has helped transform sessions into collaborative experiences where clients feel seen, supported, and motivated to participate in their own emotional development. This tool has become an invaluable resource in promoting positive outcomes and fostering a therapeutic environment that encourages healing and growth.","fullyFundedDate":1767553001447,"projectUrl":"project/switch-on-success-fun-tools-for-emotion/9950756/","projectTitle":"Switch on Success: Fun Tools for Emotional Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Medina","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10378742"},{"teacherId":10374188,"projectId":9944655,"letterContent":"As the Speech-Language Pathologist at a Title I high school, I have the privilege of working every day with extraordinary students—many of whom have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or other communication disabilities, and who also come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. High school is a complex social world, filled with unspoken expectations, subtle social cues, and the pressure to belong. For students with pragmatic language challenges, these barriers can feel overwhelming.\r\nOne of the most difficult environments for my students has always been the cafeteria. While lunch is the social highlight of the day for many teenagers, it can be one of the most intimidating and isolating times for students with disabilities. Between the noise, the crowds, the lack of structure, and the pressure to engage with peers, many of my students retreat to empty corners, eat alone, or opt to spend the entire period in my classroom. They want friendships. They want connection. But without support, the environment itself becomes a barrier.\r\nThanks to this project, that barrier has finally begun to break down.\r\nWith the addition of a Nintendo Switch and collaborative, age‑appropriate games, we have transformed my classroom into a welcoming, structured Lunch Club—an inclusive social community that students genuinely look forward to each day. Instead of eating alone or avoiding social interaction, students now walk in with excitement, sit with peers, and engage in meaningful, shared experiences through games that feel familiar, relevant, and motivating to them.\r\nThe impact has been remarkable.\r\nThe Lunch Club gives my students a safe, low‑pressure environment to practice the real-world social skills they struggle with: initiating conversation, negotiating turns, managing frustration, reading subtle cues, and using language to solve problems with peers. These are not hypothetical role‑plays or scripted worksheets—these are authentic, naturally occurring communication moments embedded within collaborative activities that feel fun, not clinical.\r\nWhen conflict or confusion arises during gameplay, I am there in the moment to guide them through repairing communication breakdowns. Students learn how to clarify messages, apologize appropriately, share opinions respectfully, make compromises, and consider others' perspectives—all skills that are essential for success in future jobs, post-secondary education, and independent community life.\r\nWhat has been most powerful is watching students who used to sit silently during lunch begin to initiate conversations independently. Some students have formed new friendships for the first time this year. Others are demonstrating improved self‑advocacy skills, greater confidence, and the ability to stay regulated during social challenges. The games have provided common ground—a shared interest that bridges differences and sparks natural interaction.\r\nThis project has also addressed an important issue of equity. Students with disabilities in low‑income communities often lack access to the high‑interest tools that support meaningful social learning. Donor support has allowed our students to access a therapeutic resource that is both highly effective and deeply engaging—something they would not have experienced otherwise.\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students now have a structured, inclusive, and motivating space where they can build the communication, teamwork, and social‑emotional skills that will carry them into adulthood. You have helped create a place where they feel safe, connected, and capable.\r\nThank you for giving my students the opportunity to grow—not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and as valued members of their school community. Your support is making a life-changing difference.","fullyFundedDate":1765078168317,"projectUrl":"project/level-up-social-skills-for-students-with/9944655/","projectTitle":"LEVEL UP Social Skills for Students with Autism & Disabilities","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Nguyen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10374188_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764814151796","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10374188"},{"teacherId":9707811,"projectId":9446786,"letterContent":"Merci (thank you) for your donation. The moment the headphones arrived, my students were eager to try them out. Several of them immediately put them on, smiled, and got right to work. For many of our students, this simple tool has made a big difference in how they experience learning each day.\r\n\r\nOne student, who often has difficulty staying focused during independent tasks, now uses the headphones to listen to classical music while he works. He shared that having music in the background helps him concentrate and feel calm. Watching him settle into his assignments with more confidence and fewer distractions has been a powerful reminder of how meaningful these headphones are for our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe headphones have quickly become one of the most valued tools we have. Students are using them during reading, writing, and other quiet work periods. They are also helpful during transitions, when the classroom can become noisy or overstimulating. By reducing background noise and giving students more control over their sensory experience, the headphones are helping them stay engaged and better manage their emotions throughout the day.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, my students now have access to a resource that promotes focus, confidence, and emotional regulation.
