They immediately began brainstorming what they could build, test, and explore. One of the first activities they jumped into was creating simple machines using gears and levers. Students who are usually quiet during traditional lessons suddenly became leaders—testing ideas, adjusting their designs, and eagerly explaining their thinking to classmates. The hands-on nature of these resources has changed the way they engage with learning; they are not just listening, they are doing.\r\n\r\nThese new tools have allowed us to take our STEM lessons to a deeper level. Students are now able to prototype ideas, code robots through obstacle courses, and design small projects that connect directly to what they're reading in the library. One memorable moment came when a group of students used the materials to engineer a \"book protector,\" a structure designed to keep a book dry during a pretend rainstorm. They tested, failed, redesigned, and celebrated their success—learning more through that process than any worksheet could ever teach.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students involve taking these foundational skills and applying them to larger, more complex challenges. We are beginning a unit where students will design their own inventions to solve a real-life problem at school. Thanks to your generosity, our Maker Lab has become a place where creativity thrives and students feel empowered to think like engineers, creators, and innovators. You've helped make learning meaningful, memorable, and exciting—and we are so grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1757961995599,"projectUrl":"project/minds-in-motion-building-in-the-maker-l/9452869/","projectTitle":"Minds in Motion: Building in the Maker Lab","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Feurtado","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10073786_orig.jpg?crop=4284,4284,x0,y199&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752026376491","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10073786"},{"teacherId":10073786,"projectId":9452831,"letterContent":"Our students are naturally curious, hands-on learners who love exploring new ideas, solving problems, and creating things that matter to them. By adding a 3D printer to our library's Maker Lab, we have given them a powerful tool that turns imagination into reality. This resource allows students to design models connected to books they read, prototype solutions to real-world challenges, and participate in engaging STEM activities that build critical thinking and creativity.\r\n\r\nThe impact of this tool goes far beyond a single project. A 3D printer is helping all learners—especially those who thrive when they can build, touch, and see their ideas take shape. It opens doors for collaboration, innovation, and confidence as students discover what they are capable of creating. With your support, our library will continue to grow as a space where every child can see themselves as an inventor, designer, and maker. We can't wait to learn to play our Ukuleles. Seeing the students' smiles from ear-to ear, when I told them this project had been funded made it all worthwhile.\r\nEach year I teach Keyboards to 3rd grade and flutophones to 5th grade, so I needed an instrument to teach the 4th grade. I have always wanted to teach a string instrument because many students have a guitar or ukulele at their homes. Being able to actually put an instrument in students' hands, can immediately get them hooked on having a desire to play and begin a lifelong passion for music.\r\nI plan on teaching the ukuleles sometime after the first of the year and would like for some of them to play at their Spring concert. I will be teaching 9 classes of fourth graders, so taking proper care of the instrument will be the first lesson I teach them. Then, we will learn the letters of each string and the proper way to hold them.\r\nMy goal is to teach them a few basic chords and to play a song--\"You Are My Sunshine\"\r\nYou have made a dream come true for over 200 students at our school this year! I am hoping to extend opportunities for 3rd and 5th grade classes next year.","fullyFundedDate":1746787417900,"projectUrl":"project/uke-can-play-it/9154816/","projectTitle":"Uke Can Play It!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Walden","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5421556_orig.jpg?crop=420,420,x632,y203&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741666811681","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5421556"},{"teacherId":6444513,"projectId":9295699,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom economy project through DonorsChoose! Your donation made a meaningful impact on my students by helping us create a fun and engaging way to learn real-world financial skills. With the materials funded, we were able to set up a fully functioning classroom economy where students earned classroom cash for completing assignments, demonstrating positive behavior, and participating in class. They were thrilled to use their hard-earned \"money\" to purchase prizes, save for larger rewards, or donate to classroom causes.\r\n\r\nThis project has transformed the way my students engage with learning and responsibility. They've become more motivated, accountable, and excited to come to school each day. Beyond just earning prizes, they're learning essential life skills like budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions.
