By the end of the lab, students were able to use data to determine whether a type of soil was well-suited for growing different crops. They gained knowledge of how soil productivity is determined to help foster a deeper understanding of crop yields and the impacts of agriculture. The supplies requested were used to determine the nutrient levels of the soil on campus. These tests are very important because identifying nutrients in the soil helps inform future care methods. These nutrients are used by plants for the creation of amino acids, seed formation, metabolism, and so much more! You are amazing!! Thank you so much for caring about student learning and mental health! My students loved this aquarium upgrade! \r\n\r\nThese items were used to upgrade my classroom aquarium! I teach Marine Biology and AP Environmental Science, and the aquarium helps to ground us in science practices at the beginning of class. We make observations, develop questions, and discuss experimental methods for how we would investigate those questions. The science practice of making observations, slows our minds and hearts and forces us to be present with each other and our surroundings. Watching fish swim has a calming effect, and studies show that observing aquatic life can reduce stress and anxiety levels. Students learn that you can \"do science\" anywhere, and that the act of slowing down and paying attention is good for our mental health.\r\n\r\nStudents have already designed incredible experimental questions about our classroom aquarium and students will often come into my class during breaks to watch the fish on a hard day.","fullyFundedDate":1730309301545,"projectUrl":"project/a-fin-tastic-purchase-for-a-marine-biolo/8904939/","projectTitle":"A Fin-tastic Purchase for a Marine Biology Classroom!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kleinmaier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9816997_orig.jpg?crop=500,500,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730047464481","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9816997"},{"teacherId":43804,"projectId":8590133,"letterContent":"We learned so much from reading and discussing these books this month. Students appreciated the wide variety of choices and the high-interest topics. The thematic collection allowed us to discuss and write about ethical dilemmas as a class, while book clubs for individual texts allowed students to delve into the rhetorical choices of the authors as well as the powerful language.\r\n\r\nWe finished this unit with a rhetorical analysis presentation, in which students analyzed the features of their text and then learned about others. Here are a few great lines from their presentations:\r\n\r\n-Discussing exigence, one group wrote of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: \"Skloot was motivated to write this book because she was frustrated with the omnipresence of HeLa cells and the lack of information about Henrietta herself. As she researched more, Skloot's motivation shifted to helping Henrietta's family and questioning the medical and scientific practices surrounding her case.\"\r\n\r\n-Analyzing the rhetorical choices in Radium Girls, another group described: \"Moore includes many pieces of gritty detail about the girls' afflictions caused by radium. She describes the girls' looks and character. She describes them as lively, which later contrasts with them dying gruesome deaths. Moore compares the girls to ghosts and included times when other characters had called the girls ghosts due to them being luminous.\"\r\n\r\n-A third group captured the tone in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: \"The tone within the book exhibits empathy and curiosity. The tone is empathetic because it shows the compassion and the understanding of the family facing these challenges in the U.S. It also shifts to tones of curiosity because the author highlights her understanding of the Hmong culture and stories.\"\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our classroom so much to learn and discuss!
