These weren't just any books—they were stories that spoke to my students' lives and sparked conversations that went beyond the pages. Esperanza Rising opened up deep discussions about resilience, overcoming challenges, and social justice. At the same time, Island of the Blue Dolphins brought the students into a world of survival, independence, and connection to nature. Both texts tied in beautifully with our social studies lessons, helping students see the world in a new way and relate what they were reading to the bigger picture we were studying in class.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is far from a passive experience. We engage deeply with the books, not just reading, but reflecting, discussing, and creating. After we finished the novel study, the students wrote thoughtful book reports, created dioramas to represent key moments, and gave presentations on their final projects. Watching them share their work with such pride was a reminder of how much the books meant to them and how much they had learned.\r\n\r\nThere are a few students in particular who have really come alive with these texts. A few of them have always had a fascination with history and culture, so Island of the Blue Dolphins was a perfect fit for them. They dove into the story with so much energy and creativity, and their diorama was truly impressive. Another one of my student, who migrated to the United States last year, absolutely connected with Esperanza Rising. They saw themselves in Esperanza's journey and shared some incredibly insightful thoughts during our discussions. It's moments like these that make teaching so rewarding.\r\n\r\nYour donation has helped my students develop important skills—critical thinking, empathy, creativity, and a deeper love for reading. It's more than just about the books; it's about the lessons they take with them and the connections they make along the way.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity. Your support has meant so much to us, and I can't tell you how much it's appreciated. We are so lucky to have had the chance to learn with these books, and we owe it all to you.","fullyFundedDate":1728010088834,"projectUrl":"project/igniting-imagination-chapter-books-for/8679995/","projectTitle":"Igniting Imagination: Chapter Books for Young Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Languren","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9691770"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_24879","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":297,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":80,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"18.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":24879,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Albert Baxter Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Albert Baxter Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/bellflower-unified-school-district/albert-baxter-elementary-school/24879"}
