Since receiving the new decodable readers, the struggling readers I teach are excited, engaged, and willing to read. The phonics-based books also have fostered a stronger sense of collaboration among students as they work together as a small group or in pairs to use their phonics knowledge to read and comprehend a book that is appropriate for their reading needs. Your support has directly impacted the learning experience of more than 40 students, allowing them to see themselves as readers and develop a sense of pride in the hard work they are doing.\r\n\r\nThe purpose of decodable readers is to develop decoding skills, and this is the focus of the text format. As children become more proficient in the alphabetic code and advance through a series of decodable books, the vocabulary and text structure become more complex. Often in the general education classroom my students are expected to read books that are not decodable or are not at their current skill level. When this happens, struggling readers often become frustrated. In order to continue to read they start guessing at words, thus developing poor reading strategies. In the process, the child misses the direct connection between the phonics and word solving skills they are learning and the actual text they are supposed to read. On the other hand, when my students read a fully decodable book, they can use their understanding of phonics and their word solving skills to decode unknown words. Because the Title 1 reading students can figure out every word in the book, they feel successful! This success spurs them on to build fluency and develop good reading strategies. Recently, during our flashlight Friday reading time, a second grade girl said to me \"I love to read here because I like the books and I am comfortable.\" Thank you for helping give my students the confidence to feel more \"comfortable\" and less frustrated with reading. As a reading teacher, my goal is to help every student find joy in reading and to hopefully set them up to be lifelong readers and learners.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your generosity will be felt throughout my reading small groups for some time to come, as it helps create a better learning environment that sets our students up for a brighter future. We cannot thank you enough and we appreciate your dedication to making our intervention program great and helping our students to thrive and reach their full potential.
