Many of my students have not had the opportunity to read books. I am a preschool teacher in a low income community. For many of my students, as they come to school, it is their first experience seeing a book. At the beginning of the year I teach what a book is and the proper use of it! It takes time for the students to learn, but once they learn the need and want for different books is so great! The children ask for books and sit in the literacy center looking at the pictures and trying to figure out what is going on in the story. This is a first step in learning how to read. As a teacher I encourage families to go to the library but many families have working parents that have to be at work very early and stay late, so taking the kids to the library is the last thing on their minds. They are just doing their best to support their family. This is why I want to be able to have as many different books as possible in the classroom for the children to choose from.
