Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Who are my students? That question can be answered in multiple ways. First, they are diverse. They come from all cultural backgrounds. Many are disadvantaged some are in homeless shelters and all take advantage of our schools' free breakfast and lunch programs.
Up until March 19, 2020 my students were "marching" steadily towards success and marking new achievements.
That "march" was to culminate in a "moving up" ceremony in June.
Then Covid-19 struck and our trajectory was suddenly interrupted. Now we have adopted a remote learning model and have been communicating and teaching via the internet. The NYDOE has provided tablets to all my students to use from their homes. While some students have enthusiastically embraced this new form of learning others have struggled to keep up. There have been challenges in guiding Kindergarten students and some parents in the technicalities of remote learning. It has been a learning experience for all of us. I am very proud of the efforts my students and their parents have made.
My Project
Reflecting back on the past three months I am struck by my students' determination to keep learning. They have faced many obstacles but have tried their best. Although they will be missing an in person "moving up" ceremony I would like my project to give them recognition for all their hard work all year. I would like them to enjoy the inspiring story of The Little Engine That Could and know that they must keep going and never give up. The sunglasses and beach ball will help them enjoy summer.
