Zooming Into the Garden as a Respite From Digital Zooms

Help me give my students the garden tools to revive our overgrown school garden. The time they spend here will be some hands-on, minds-on learning away from the multiple zoom meetings they attend.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Returning to school physically but still staying in an online setting seemed counterintuitive for myself as a teacher and to the majority of my students as well. Out of the 28 advisory students I had, only 5 students opted to return. My advisory students are 6th graders, all of whom I had never met in real life and the youngest group of students I have ever worked with (I am a HS Chemistry teacher at a K-12 span school). Nonetheless, I was excited to meet the 5 when we returned to school on the last week of April.

My students are young, vibrant and curious individuals with questions and anecdotes galore.

They enjoy talking with each other and doing short work-outs and stretches with me in between our zooms. It's their first time in a high school chemistry class so they question everything from the safety shower to the fume hoods to the outlets at the lab tables. Essentially they are learners who seek to engage with others beyond the screen.

My Project

My students are young, vibrant and curious individuals with questions and anecdotes galore. However, as we transitioned into our various Zoom classes after advisory, they became a lot more subdued. They stare blankly at the screen and I'll occasionally hear their muffled reading voices every now and then and not much more than that. It's difficult to check-in on their progress while I myself am teaching my students on my own zoom. I recognized now the social emotional importance of their physically being in school and I aim to maximize that in the short advisory time we have together.

Please help my students to zoom into gardening to revive the overgrown school garden for some hands-on, mind-on experiences.

We need various supplies to be able to engage in this project for some learning outdoors. We will use the supplies to clean the area and prepare it for a bountiful garden in the fall. This project allows my students to work cooperatively while still physically distanced. It affords them the opportunity to step away from the computer screen and engage in their surroundings in a meaningful way. In a time where these students have experienced a lot of loss (whether of loved ones, experiences, learning, control, etc) I want to create a space for them to soak in some Vitamin D, rest their eyes from screen-time and experience the many mental, social and emotional benefits of gardening.
