Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school with 76.9% of our student population getting free and reduced lunch. My students are highly engaged and love the hands-on, project-based nature of my engineering classes. However, with the global pandemic still going on, an enormous part of student learning this coming school year will happen online via zoom meetings and virtual hands-on activities using apps and websites.
Unbeknownst to students, a flurry of activities happens behind an online class.
Aside from teaching the lesson, I am in charge of switching between zoom views, managing breakout rooms, monitoring chat, and waiting room, solving student technical issues, switching between browser tabs, conducting polls, surveys, or exit tickets, and checking submission on the learning management system. I also need to read student's on-screen facial expressions and body gestures to gauge student interest levels and, on the fly, make adjustments to my lesson. I need to manage all of these to keep my students' focus on learning and not the technical issues that would derail an otherwise brilliant lesson plan.
My Project
I've experienced first-hand as a participant in a month-long online class and as a co-host for a week-long online summer camp the intricacies of online meetings. I've seen how online meetings if done right, can engage students, foster collaboration, and facilitate learning effectively.
Having the right tech tools can help zoom meetings run better, faster and support stronger learning.
The 34" computer monitor, docking station, and USB microphone will help me facilitate my online classes. The docking station will enable me to hook up my Surface Pro laptop to the 34" computer monitor. The widescreen monitor will provide me with a view of multiple windows at one time making transitions between different activities, lessons, and browser windows seamless. The USB microphone will provide consistent high-quality audio throughout the meeting.
