Help me give my students a virtual classroom. I am currently working on a very outdated laptop that does not have a camera. I am not able to Zoom with my students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On the morning of Friday, March 13, 2020, we were told to be at a last-minute grade level meeting. We had 45 minutes to plan and prepare work for the following 2 weeks. The students received packets of work, math books, grammar books, and a letter explaining to parents of the school closures. It took us all by surprise.
Due to the pandemic, the school closures were extended indefinitely, distant learning suddenly became our reality.
Five out of twenty-four students had some form of device available to them at home. The other 19 students picked up devices from the school to have access to online learning. I have a very old HP laptop I am currently working on. The outdated laptop does not have a camera; although I can still Zoom with my students, they are only able to hear my voice but can not see me. I am in need of a fully functional device.
My Project
Teaching remotely has proven to be a challenge for my students as well as for me. We are missing our daily interactions. They miss their classmates, their routines, and their teacher. I miss seeing them daily and watching them learn and become more independent. For many of my students, the safety and security they looked forward to receiving at school are no longer present at their home. I am very grateful to the school district for providing the students Chromebooks to engage in distant learning. The one thing missing from our daily lessons is the face to face interaction from their teacher. I am currently working on a very outdated laptop that does not have a camera. I am not able to Zoom with my students. I need a MacBook Air.
Face to face interaction will increase the sense of security and safety desperately needed at this time.
We are all missing the safety and emotional stability the classroom provided for us. Being able to Zoom while teaching will increase our success as distant learners.
