Zoology Students Harvest Pearls for a Memorable Learning Experience

My Students

Seeing students excited about science has been the greatest gift since joining DonorsChoose.org. Your donations make hands-on learning and inclusion a reality in my classroom!

We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on.

Many of my students are tactile or kinesthetic learners who enjoy being able to get out of their desks, move around, work with their hands, experiment, and create things. I also have a unique group of learners with special needs who often require modified instruction to achieve success in our science class.

My Project

I would like to put a spin on the normal clam dissection for my zoology class and instead let students dissect oysters to culture their own pearls. What a memorable experience to open your own oyster, learn all of the organs, then to get your own pearl souvenir.

Students will learn the reasons and process behind pearl production.

They will be able to practice measurement using the vernier calipers and compare colors of their pearls to understand variation among living organisms. They will assess the quality of their pearls and see chemicals we study in class such as nacre. They will compare oysters to other bivalves such as clams, scallops, and mussels.
