Zoo Animal Robots

My Project

This is my school's first year with a STEM Lab. PreK-5th grade and all SpEd students rotate through STEM Lab. Students have been excited to learn and use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) this year. Though my students live a small, rural town with little or no economic opportunities for their parents, they are thoughtful young learners who enjoy creating and building in STEM Lab. Homeroom teachers believe students' problem solving skills and their ability to work with others have improved because of using the EDP in STEM Lab.

Second and third students have thrived in design and construction this year using the EDP; therefore, I would like to enhance those skills using simple robots with Robotis ZooMates.

I want to teach my young students to read and use an instructional manual to build a simple and movable robot. Students will use the instructional manual to build a rabbit, penguin, or monkey. Once students are confident in building animal robots using instructions, they will design their own animal to build using the Robotis ZooMates pieces. This project will strengthen my students problem solving skills, understanding nonfictional texts, and engineering abilities.
