This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are middle schoolers at a Title l school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes.
They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.
My students are active and enthusiastic. They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Our school is in a high needs, high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. Despite these challenges, our students work hard, stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities, and are always striving to be and do better for themselves and for others.
My Project
Nothing seems to bring my students' reading to life like reading about the undead. These books will go a long way in keeping their reading spark alive. My students are required to read every night for homework, yet many state that they need more books that are interesting to keep them invested in reading. By bringing these books into our classroom library for students to read at home we are making reading something fun to do and not something that they have to do.
My students have so much interest and passion and these zombie books are just what they need, to further their interest on this topic.
Additionally, by having other zombie materials students can engage in a topic that they have a strong interest in. The zombie cards, zombie coloring informational texts and zombie book series will work as incentives to push their homework reading responses to the next level as they read about the topic of zombies. Furthermore, the 3D pen will allow students to take their reading to the next level by being able to create their own version of a zombie. In all, these materials will truly enhance the reading that my students are required to do at home for homework by allowing them to further delve into a topic that they are truly interested in.
