My Project
We are teaching students about healthy eating and climate change. We want to start juicing to help students reduce food waste in several ways, such as utilizing fruits and vegetables that might otherwise be discarded.
In the cafeteria, we noticed that many fruits and vegetables were not being opened but thrown away.
If the bag is opened, students might take one or two bites and throw the fruits and vegetables straight into the garbage.
We thought of having a juice bar in the lunchroom when students arrive for breakfast or lunch. We could put the fruits and vegetables in the juicer, and the students could enjoy a healthy treat before class begins or during lunchtime.
Juicing encourages students to think creatively about using all parts of their food. For instance, they might juice the leafy tops of carrots or broccoli stems instead of discarding them.
We hope to create a habit of healthy eating with regular juicing to foster mindfulness about food consumption and encourage students to value their produce, reducing impulsive discarding of edible food.
We want to do this for the entire school population. Students can learn early on the importance of food waste and its impact on climate change.
